Privacy Notice Affairs are 10 a penny in Soapland, but for Coronation Street’s Toyah Habeeb, sleeping with her sister Leanne Battersby’s partner is about much more than “just sex”. Toyah, played by Georgia Taylor, has embarked on an emotional affair with Nick Tilsley (Ben Price), who first fell in love with Leanne (Jane Danson) back in 1997. “We wanted to make this as much about emotion as sex, because it’s really not just ‘we can’t resist each other, we need to tear each other’s clothes off’,” says Georgia. “We’ve all seen that a million times in soaps, and that’s great fun to watch, but it has to be something deeper than that for it to be interesting. But that means the stakes are a lot higher.” Leanne’s relationships with her sister and Nick have been under pressure since Leanne met charismatic Rowan Cunliffe (Emrhys Cooper) who has recruited her into his cult, The Autovalent Institute. Now, for the first time in years, Nick and Toyah have united. Toyah confided in Nick about burying her stillborn baby, Rose, after being raped as a teenager, and the pair grew closer.

“Toyah and Nick used to hate each other when I was first in the show,” Georgia explains. “Even in more recent years they tolerate each other more than get on. But when Toyah told Nick about Rose, he was so understanding, so sympathetic, Toyah saw Nick in a new light, and he suddenly, and confusingly, became attractive.” However, the affair could be discovered after Toyah collapsed with stomach pains at the Bistro. She was taken to hospital, where doctors suggested she might be pregnant, which “is a big deal for her” says Georgia. Viewers have seen numerous storylines about Toyah’s struggle to start a family.

Georgia describes it as a “bittersweet” moment for Toyah, saying, “It’s everything she’s wanted her entire adult life. But if this were to go ahead, I think she could say to Nick, ‘You don’t have to be involved – I’ll do it on my own, I’ll move away.’” Although Georgia is against that plotline for personal reasons. “Hopefully not – because I don’t want to leave the show!” she laughs. Luckily for Georgia, Toyah’s dreams were dashed once again leaving Toyah feeling a mixture of sadness and guilt. “There are moments when she’s overwhelmed with guilt,” shares Georgia. “Then there are moments when Nick and Toyah both quite comfortably try to put it to one side. I don’t want to ‘victim blame’ but Leanne’s behaviour is so out there – she’s so combative and almost like a robot,” she says. “We had some scenes where she’s almost not a real person. It’s quite chilling and I think Jane’s doing an amazing job, because it’s like you’re doing a scene with someone you’ve never played a scene with before. It’s odd.” The complex storyline has presented acting challenges for Georgia, too.

“There was an episode last week where Jane said to me, ‘You went through every single emotion!’ Toyah had buried the baby, gone for Rowan, had a huge fight with Leanne and had sex with Nick… It was about 18 stories in one episode,” says Georgia. “It’s really challenging, and, as an actor, that’s what you want.” Despite the drama on screen, Georgia says the three are friends. “I love working with Jane,” says Georgia. “And it’s fun working with Ben. The three of us do have a laugh, and, sometimes, when we get the script, we’ll take screenshots and be like, ‘Look what I’ve got to say about you on Tuesday!’” she chuckles. Although she can’t reveal what’s to come, Georgia believes Leanne and Toyah’s bond is unbreakable and hopes that bosses will find a “clever” way for the sisters to reunite. “We have the history and chemistry so I hope we’ll find a way to make it believable,” says Georgia. “But before they come back together, it’s going to be explosive.” Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
