Privacy NoticeCoronation Street star Peter Ash has opened up on filming his emotional storyline as Paul Foreman, who learnt he had ‘months to live’ after he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2023. Viewers have seen the character’s condition worsen on screen, as the tragic storyline is set to come to an end. In emotional scenes, the character has even contemplated the idea of taking his own life. In recent episodes, viewers have seen Paul’s speech being impacted, as he’s started to use an assisted machine. Speaking on his upcoming departure from the beloved soap to OK! and other media on the red carpet at the RadioTimes.com soap awards, Peter said: “It’s a double-edged sword. I’ll be sad to go but so grateful that I’ve been trusted with this storyline.” The star also said he had ‘mixed emotions’ about the story coming to an end.

It has also been revealed that Paul and his onscreen husband Billy Mayhew, played by Daniel Brocklebank, will feature in a special episode devoted entirely to Paul’s story. Paul is determined to spend his ‘last day of freedom’ out the flat after a new occupational therapist tells him the stairlift is now too dangerous and he can no longer leave his home. Before this, spoilers have revealed that Billy is set to call the family together for a meeting, where Paul plays them a pre-recorded message telling him that he’s dying, and that he can’t bear anymore fight. When asked on how it felt filming the special episode, at the RadioTimes soap awards, Paul revealed it was “amazing but tough”.
Paul’s heartbreaking storyline is coming to an end
“It was amazing, but again, tough, because it’s so emotional and hard, but it’s a beautiful episode. Beautifully written, and I’m really looking forward to seeing that. It was great to work on.” On Saturday night, Peter picked up the award for Best Storyline at the first RadioTimes.com Soap Awards, which were held at Manchester’s Midland hotel. Paul’s motor neurone disease diagnosis was voted for as the winner by a panel of soap experts. The actor joined the soap in May 2018, where he shared a prison cell with David Platt (Jack P. Shepard). In 2019, he made a return to the soap, where he was surprising revealed to be the estranged twin brother of Gemma Winter, played by Dolly-Rose Campbell.
