Privacy NoticeCoronation Street’s Calum Lill has opened up about the stark warning he received from show bosses before stepping into his role on the cobbles. The actor, who plays the manipulative lawyer Joel, was left reeling in recent episodes after discovering that Lauren Bolton, portrayed by Cait Fitton, is expecting his child. Joel’s dark past of grooming and abusing Lauren was revealed through harrowing flashback scenes, leaving him terrified that the pregnancy could be the proof that leads to his undoing. Chatting on ITV’s This Morning, Calum shared insights into his challenging plot: “From the email for the screen test they were like ‘you just need to be aware it’s going to get very dark’ so I had one script which was him being nice and charming and one that was him being not so much, so when I finally got the call saying I got it i thought I’ve got a big undertaking now.”

After Lauren made her escape from Joel in Tuesday’s episode, the storyline intensifies as he becomes hell-bent on finding her. Meanwhile, Joel’s fiancee Dee-Dee Bailey, played by Channique Sterling-Brown, is also on the hunt for the missing Lauren, unwittingly giving Joel an advantage with her inside information, reports the Mirror. Calum further commented: “It’s incredible to play a baddie on a soap but I didn’t just want to play some moustache-twirling villain you know. It is a serious topic so it was important to me and everyone in Corrie to make it true to life and authentic and not some sort of cliche.”

He’s only going to get worse.”
