Privacy NoticeItalian-American chef Michael Chiarello died after suffering “an acute allergic reaction that led to anaphylactic shock”, and now a representative for the late star has said doctors “may never know” what caused the reaction. Michael, a celebrity chef in the US who was known for his Italian-influenced California cuisine, had spent a week at the Queen Of The Valley Medical Center in Napa, California, before his death at the age of 61. “The doctors don’t know what caused the allergic reaction and neither does the family,” a representative told PEOPLE. “They may never know.” Following Michael’s death on Friday 6 October, his family, who were with him when he died, released a statement that read, “We deeply mourn the loss of our beloved patriarch Michael.

Widely reported triggers causing anaphylactic shock are insect stings, peanuts, as seen in a recent Emmerdale storyline, tree nuts, milk, seafood and certain medicines such as antibiotics. Though an autopsy report could help identify what the chef might have had a reaction to, the representative did not say whether one would be carried out. Throughout his long career in the spotlight, Michael hosted shows on PBS, Food Network, Fine Living and Cooking Channel. He also appeared as a guest chef on American lifestyle show Today and Whoopi Goldberg’ s The View. He was a judge on Bravo’s Top Chef and Top Chef Masters and competed on Food Network’s Next Iron Chef in 2011. The news of Michael’s death comes after fellow celebrity chef Jock Zonfrillo tragically passed away earlier this year. The Scottish chef who was a judge on MasterChef Australia had been battling bowel cancer before he was sadly found dead on 30 April at the age of 46. TV cook Gordon Ramsay tweeted at the time, “Saddened by the devastating news of Jock Zonfrillo’s passing. I truly enjoyed the time we spent together on MasterChef in Australia.
