Privacy NoticeJohn Barrowman has confessed to experiencing suicidal thoughts following the scandal surrounding his on-set behaviour. The Doctor Who star had previously acknowledged exposing himself on set, but had downplayed it as mere “tomfoolery” and “high-spirited behaviour” intended to entertain colleagues. However, in a recent interview with the Mirror, he revealed that the scandal took a toll on his mental health. “I had thoughts of suicide, going out and trying to do certain things and harm myself, and a couple of times debating how I was going to kill myself,” he admitted. John, 57, credited his loved ones with preventing him from acting on these thoughts. “The thing was I couldn’t do it because of my family and friends,” he said, referencing his husband Scott Gill, whom he married in 2006. The controversy led to John losing his job on Dancing On Ice, and he expressed concerns about being “cancelled”. He disputed the narrative surrounding his actions, claiming that the incident was a “Something that was a stupid prank that was done amongst cast members and who the cast members never complained, never said anything about, but a narrative was created that apparently I was going around and throwing my c*** on people’s shoulders, which was not true,” that had been exaggerated.

The actor stated: “We had pranks, but they were amongst the company members and we all laughed and had fun. I was being, in a sense, publicly punished and humiliated for those things and also being cancelled.” He added that he would “never do anything to harm a woman or a man or anybody, transgender, you name it”.

The star feared he was going to be cancelled

In 2008, John apologised after exposing himself on a live BBC Radio 1 show, stating that he had gone “too far” with his joking around. When allegations about his behaviour on the set of Doctor Who emerged in 2021, he told The Guardian that his actions were intended as a joke to entertain colleagues backstage. “With the benefit of hindsight, I understand that upset may have been caused by my exuberant behaviour and I have apologised for this previously,” he said. “Since my apology in November 2008, my understanding and behaviour have also changed.” If you’ve been affected by any of the issues in this story you can contact Samaritans in the UK and Ireland on freephone 116 123, or email jo@samaritans.org or jo@samaritans.ie.
