Privacy NoticeCat Deeley was visibly moved on This Morning as she consoled a bereaved mum who spoke of the heartbreak over her daughter’s death due to an allergic reaction. Hannah Jacobs, 13, tragically died after accidentally consuming dairy to which she was allergic on February 8, 2023. Her mum, Abimbola Duyile, shared her gut-wrenching experience on the show today, calling for coffee shops and eateries to improve their allergen practices to prevent similar incidents. Abimbola recounted the horrific day at the pharmacy: “I rushed to the [pharmacy] counter and said, ‘My daughter’s having an allergic reaction. I don’t mind paying for it [an epipen] but right now, I just need to give it to her’. She was still screaming in pain and someone said to me, ‘Did you need an ambulance? ‘ And I said, ‘Just give me a minute’ because she’s never had a severe one before.” Describing the desperate scene, she continued: “It was like a movie. They didn’t have the correct amount to give her,” with both Abimbola and Cat growing tearful over the memory.

The situation escalated with a bystander calling an ambulance and a defibrillator being used, during which Abimbola realised her daughter wasn’t going to make it: “This is not happening,” she said, “I lost it. My whole life came crashing down in five minutes. It was very quick.” Ben Shephard, co-host on the show, expressed how difficult it was to hear the distressing story. In an earlier statement, Costa expressed its condolences: “The loss of Hannah is a tragedy, and our heartfelt thoughts remain with her family and friends. Understanding how this awful situation occurred is in the interest of everyone. We have listened to everything the coroner has said this week and will carefully consider her comments together with any report she may issue and respond appropriately.”

Cat Deeley got emotional on This Morning today when a lady came on the show to speak about the tragic loss of her daughter

A coroner determined that the fatal incident was the result of failing to adhere to allergy discussion protocols. Assistant coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe stated: “The root cause of this death is a failure to follow the processes in place to discuss allergies combined with a failure of communication between the mother and the barista.” After the inquest, Hannah’s mother lovingly recounted that her daughter always took her allergies seriously. Remembering Hannah, she spoke of her as “vivacious, caring, affectionate, energetic, and outspoken… with a strong sense of right and wrong,” and lamented, “My beautiful Hannah only had 13 years on this Earth when she should have had many, many more.” Abimbola and her grieving family are now campaigning for changes to be made. She proposed that products should come with a sticker detailing their contents to help prevent similar tragedies from befalling other families. *This Mornings airs from 10am weekdays on ITV1.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
