Appointed last month as the Tangerines’ new head, Bruce will be absent following the passing of the young son of former Millwall striker Matt Smith. Blackpool shared a touching statement on Friday night, announcing: “The Club can announce that Head Coach Steve Bruce will not be in attendance at tomorrow’s fixture against Barnsley due to the tragic passing of his four-month old grandson, Madison.” Extending their deepest sympathies, the club added: “Everyone at the football club sends their love to Steve and his family. We ask that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with this sudden and unexpected loss in their family.” In solidarity, Millwall also conveyed heartfelt words: “Millwall Football Club sends its unconditional love and support to Matt Smith, and his family and friends, following the passing of his four-month old son, Madison. We are with you every step of the way, Smudger.” Additionally, the EFL reached out to Bruce with a message of compassion stating: “Everyone at the EFL sends their love and support to Steve and his family at this incredibly difficult time.” Tributes have been pouring in for Steve from the football community. Birmingham City, where Bruce previously managed, shared their heartfelt message: “Everyone at Blues sends their love and support to our former boss and his family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”

Matt is dealing with the passing of his son

West Bromwich Albion, another of Bruce’s past clubs, also expressed their sympathies: “Everybody at West Bromwich Albion sends their condolences, thoughts and love to Steve Bruce’s family at this desperately sad time.” Steve, who is now 63 years old, took over the reins at Blackpool on September 3 after Neil Critchley was let go. The ex-Premier League winner has been in charge for seven matches across all competitions, with only two defeats to date.

Blackpool are currently positioned tenth in League One, gearing up for their upcoming match against Barnsley on Saturday. They’re set to face Peterborough United away on Tuesday night. Taking on the role at Blackpool marks Bruce’s 13th managerial position in his career.
