Eligibility: This category is open to all models that are either brand new or have undergone significant redesigns for the model year 2024, provided we have assessed them following their updates.
Criteria: We prioritize quality, innovation, and value in our evaluation. It’s rare for a car to excel in all three areas, but strength in one aspect can make up for weaknesses in others. The competition is as much within each vehicle’s category as it is among the finalists for 2024.

2024 Chevrolet Trax Activ review by The Straight Pipes. The Trax is putting down 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque from a turbo 1.2L 3 Cylinder. At $30,554 CAD, would you take it over the Honda Civic or Buick Envista?
Last year, the notion that the 2024 model of this compact SUV would not only offer more space than its predecessor, feature advanced displays, and also come with a lower initial price might have seemed laughable. Yet, that’s precisely what occurred.
While affordability is a key factor in determining our Car of the Year, it’s not the sole criterion. What truly impressed us was the vehicle’s optional technology and display features, which rival—and in terms of ease of use, surpass—those found in many luxury vehicles. Starting from the LT trim level upwards, the car boasts an 11-inch touchscreen that is both vibrant and user-friendly, accompanied by an 8-inch digital instrument panel. This setup offers a modern interface complete with wireless compatibility for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the option for wireless charging, all priced around $24,000 (price includes destination fees) when equipped accordingly.
The vehicle’s interior has expanded, offering more room than its higher-priced sibling, which is equipped with all-wheel drive (in contrast to this model’s front-wheel drive). This positions the SUV uniquely in the market, offering substantial size for the price, and blurring the lines between a raised hatchback and an SUV. Its commendable third-place finish in our Affordable SUV Challenge of 2023 stands out, especially considering its tested price was significantly lower than that of its competitors, yet it managed to outperform several of them.
The backseat offers comfort for most due to its ample width and flat floor, while the front of the cabin provides abundant storage space for personal items. Despite modest specifications, the SUV’s turbocharged three-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission delivers adequate performance for its category. Additionally, in our tests, the vehicle achieved 34.1 mpg combined, highlighting its fuel efficiency.
A significant aspect of the vehicle’s appeal is its design, which aligns more with the bold styling of another model in the brand’s lineup, marking a significant departure from its predecessor’s more understated look.
Overall, this compact SUV sets a new standard for what consumers should expect from an affordable vehicle through its innovative design and features.
