Robert was born in New York. A baseball scholarship led him to Los Angeles City College. At a restaurant late one night, he caught the eye of a talent scout from film company Warner Bros, who signed him up for a contract at the studio. He first found fame as parking attendant J.R. Hale in edgy private detective series 77 Sunset Strip, which was a smash hit at the time. Robert’s character on the show became famous for talking in slang and abbreviations. He played the role for two seasons from 1961 to 1963 and over 50 episodes. The 70s saw a resurgence for Robert’s career when he found further success in a series if family friendly movies. The Wilderness Family saw Robert play construction worker Skip Robinson, who moves from Los Angeles with his wife (Susan Damante) and two young kids to a cabin they built in the Rocky Mountains to escape the grime and crime of city life. The film did well at the box office and spawned two sequels, The Further Adventures of the Wilderness Family (1978) and Mountain Family Robinson (1979). It turned out that the actor has found rather a niche playing dads in return-to-nature family films, as he also took the lead in Across the Great Divide (1976) and The Sea Gypsies (1978) which followed similar themes.

Robert took on many roles in his career

The multitalented actor also starred in the 1981’s Kelly which he also wrote. The actor met his wife, Alina, while on the set of the film A Night in Heaven and the two married in 1985. Although Robert retired from acting as the 2000s arrives, it seems he was far from idle. In his obituary, his hobbies were listed as sailing, pottery-making, surfing, piloting helicopters, and traveling the world.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
