Privacy NoticeThe One Show viewers were moved as Springwatch presenter Chris Packham candidly discussed the “challenges” of living with an incurable illness. On the BBC show, Chris Packham highlighted the importance of hearing health and tackled the stigma surrounding men wearing hearing aids. Diagnosed with Meniere’s disease in his 30s, Chris has been using hearing aids to manage the condition. Meniere’s disease is a rare, chronic disorder that affects the inner ear, leading to symptoms like tinnitus, vertigo, and hearing loss. Sharing his personal journey on The One Show, Chris expressed: “For me to really be able to appreciate nature, I don’t just need to be able to see it I need to be able to hear it. I need to be able to listen to nature.” He continued: “But I don’t take my hearing for granted. In the early 1990s I began to suffer from a condition known as Meniere’s syndrome, which led to a loss of hearing in my right ear,” reports the Express. Chris spoke about the impact of his hearing loss, saying: “It was really difficult losing my hearing, but what I realised was that if I wanted to enjoy life and enjoy nature the way that I wanted to, things needed to change.”

He concluded by stressing the benefits of hearing aids and addressing the concerns some men have: “I needed to get hearing aids. They’ve really helped me but over 30% of men say they’re too embarrassed to wear a hearing aid.” During a revealing segment, Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel talked about his decision to get hearing aids, sharing: “I had my eyes fixed, and nobody said anything to that. So I’m thinking… I might as well be able to hear properly as well.” Schmeichel endured poor hearing for years before finally being advised by a doctor to have a hearing test in 2022. Initially concerned about looking older, he expressed: “Like most people, I was thinking hearing aids would make me look old.”

However, the football icon noted the positive difference they’ve made: “I could hear conversations I’ve not been able to hear unless I actually look at them and see what they’re saying.” Reflecting on the impact of the hearing aids, Schmeichel admitted, “I should have done this a long, long time ago,” Fellow presenter Chris even mentioned how he pairs his hearing aids with his phone to listen to music or take calls. Additionally, an expert highlighted advancements in hearing aid technology, pointing out that they have become much smaller and inconspicuous with time.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
