Privacy Notice Jon Kay bid an emotional farewell to Katie Gornall on Monday’s BBC Breakfast, expressing his gratitude for her stellar Olympic 2024 coverage from Paris over the recent weeks. After a touching montage of the 2024 Olympics was played, Katie, joining via video link, confessed she felt quite moved by the footage of Team GB. As the segment came to an end, Jon took the opportunity to commend his colleague. Looking ahead to the next Olympics, in LA, he remarked: “See you there, Katie, look forward to it, only four more years to go.” He continued to laud her for the exceptional Olympic coverage, saying: “Thanks so much for the last few weeks, it’s been brilliant.”

Before wrapping up the interview, Jon and Sally Nugent discussed with Katie about Team GB’s triumphs at the Olympics. Reflecting on the video montage, Katie shared: “Gosh I was getting emotional listening to that then. There have been so many incredible memories throughout these games. The things that immediately spring to mind are some of those Gold Medal moments.” “And there are things that come out of nowhere and I think a highlight for me was in the artistic swimming when Britain won their first-ever medal.”

Sign up to OK’s TV newsletter to get updates sent to your inbox for free She elaborated: “That to me sums up a lot of these Olympics for Team GB, those moments you weren’t expecting.” Sally joined the conversation, noting: “We know in terms of total medals, Team GB hit their target, but not so much in the gold.” She then posed the question: “How much of an investigation will there be into the lack of gold medals…not total lack but that there could have been more.” “You’re right, Sally,” Katie responded to with an approving nod, before stating: “14 Gold medals won by Team GB at these games, that’s down from Tokyo where they won 22.” She then added a sombre note: “Of course, because the medals table is determined by that it means Britain is seventh in the medals table, their lowest finish for 20 years, below the likes of France and the Netherlands.” Team GB finished with a highly impressive 65 medals in Paris beating their total from Tokyo three years ago by one. It matches the amount from London 2012 12 years ago, and marks their third highest total over all at a singles games, sitting behind Rio at 67 and London 1908 with 146.
