Privacy NoticeBargain Hunt’s antique expert Rajkumar ‘Raj’ Bisram has been labelled a “liability” by fans after a mishap. The 68 year old faced criticism when he convinced two BBC contestants to buy what they believed was a genuine Mouseman chopping board for £90 earlier this year. At the time of purchase, Raj suggested that the wooden item could “get somewhere between £50 to £70” at auction, confessing his “thing for breadboard.” However, when the seller proposed a “special price” of £130, the expert responded: “There would be no profit on that. “It’s a nice thing but I would go to £100, but I can’t go any lower than that, so we’ll come back to it.”

In the end, the duo returned to purchase what they thought was a Mouseman chopping board. Later in the episode, Christina Trevanion consulted an auctioneer about the item. The 42 year old described the situation as “controversial”. In response, the valuer admitted: “This has been on my mind about what I can say about this. The mouse has definitely been stuck on”, reports the Express. He further explained that if the mouse had been “carved”, there would have been no question about its authenticity as a Mouseman piece. “But if you look at it you can see it doesn’t have the quality,” he clarified. At the auction hall, the contestants were initially thrilled after making a £10 profit on a wooden spoon. However, their joy was short-lived when they realised they’d brought a counterfeit Robert Thompson item to the hall.

Christina broke the news to the red team and said: “Now, your little chopping board, the auctioneers have catalogued it as Mouseman style.” She continued, revealing the unfortunate truth, “They have, unfortunately, seen another couple of examples that’s just been stuck on, so probably not by Mouseman himself.” Raj owned up to his oversight: “I have to take some of the blame because I didn’t check that it was stuck on I’ve bought so many Mouseman pieces over the years and I’ve never needed to check.” Despite Raj’s admission, the chopping board still fetched £25 at auction. The team called it a “spectacular loss” while Raj optimistically noted it “could’ve been worse”.

After the episode aired, Bargain Hunt enthusiasts voiced their opinions on X, previously known as Twitter. One user expressed disappointment: “Hopeless Raj should have noticed. #BargainHunt.” Another suggested: “Raj should be sacked #bargainhunt.” Further comments included criticism of Raj’s expertise, with one saying it’s his “only job” and another branding him “That Raj is a liability #BargainHunt.” A different viewer questioned the expert’s judgement: “How could an expert fail notice that isn’t a Mouseman and you could buy one on a town market for #5? #bargainhunt.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
