Privacy NoticeAmanda Abbington has spoken out about her treatment on Strictly Come Dancing last year in a new interview. The 50 year old actress, who quit the series and was later diagnosed with PTSD, made some strong claims about what her experience with professional dancer Giovanni Pernice was like. In an interview with The Sun On Sunday, Amanda claimed: “I found Giovanni’s behaviour unnecessary, abusive, cruel and mean. I couldn’t sit back and let him do that to other people. I had to think long and hard about making a complaint because I knew the backlash I would get. But I would not have been able to live with myself for future people going on that show. “I know what happened in that room, it’s on video and I have no problem with anyone seeing that. It’s a duty of care that is needed.” In the interview, Amanda went on to explain that she received death threats after she made a complaint to the BBC, and that she believes the BBC knew about Giovanni’s behaviour before she came forward.

A BBC inquiry has been launched, following Amanda’s original complaint and recent video footage seen by the BBC of celebrity contestant Zara McDermott with professional dancer Graziano Di Prima in rehearsals that the former Love Island star described as “distressing.” Graziano and Amanda’s former dance partner Giovanni are both under BBC investigation and neither dancer will be in the Strictly line up later this year. In May, Giovanni posted a statement on Instagram that said: “I reject any suggestion of abusive or threatening behaviour, and I look forward to clearing my name.”

He continued: “Those who have followed my journey on Strictly Come Dancing over the last decade will know that I am passionate and competitive. No-one is more ambitious for my dance partners than me. I have always striven to help them be the very best dancers they can be. This has always come from a place of love and wanting to win for me and my dance partners.” He later released a second statement in June in which he said he was fully cooperating with the BBC investigation and was looking forward to clearing his name. The BBC have announced new measures will be put in place this year to protect both professional and celebrity dancers, including a chaperone being present at every training and rehearsal session and extra training given for the production crew and staff.
