Privacy NoticeThe latest list of most popular baby names has seen the more traditional British ones take a dive in popularity, while a load of more continental names have gone racing up the popularity chart. While Olivia and Noah have remain England and Wales’ most popular baby names, Charles – the name of the King – has dropped out of the top 100 for the first time. The Office of National Statistics date reveals that 4,586 babies were called Noah in 2022, seeing it hitting the top spot for the second year, and 3,289 girls were named Olivia, making it the most popular name for girls for the seventh year in a row. And despite Brexit – or perhaps because of it – European names have taken a steep rise.

Adorable French names including Elodie have become a more popular choice, as has Ottilie. The Greek name Ophelia is on the rise and the and Irish Maeve has also had a boost. Meanwhile, the Royal names, which have always been popular, have had mixed fortunes. Charles has dropped off the list across England and Wales, but it still clings on to the 100th spot in a count of only England. However, as this count only covers 2022, so it remains to be seen what the monarch’s coronation in May 2023 may have done for the name’s popularity. Back in 2021, there were 639 babies named Charles meaning it ranked 91st. Among Charles’ children, the name William was down three places to 24th, while Harry dropped out of the top 10 altogether. It was down eight places to come in 15th place. Could the fall be to linked to Prince Harry’s estrangement from the Royal Family in recent years and the controversy over Harry and Meghan?

King Charles’ grandchildren on the list include the ever-popular George, which was ranked third, Louis came in 48th, Charlotte at 26th and Archie was 11th. Lilibet, the name of Harry and Meghan’s daughter and the nickname of the late Queen Elizabeth 11, did not feature in the last. Meanwhile, Elizabeth came 60th on the list of names for girls, while Victoria didn’t feature in the top 100 – it last made the grade back in 2017.
