Privacy NoticeMiriam Margolyes is set to return Down Under in her new TV show, A New Australian Adventure, this week. And recently, the British-Australian actress opened up about her life away from the screen – recalling one incident of passion from her teenage years. At 83, the esteemed star beams with love and has spoken openly about her romantic journey with long-term partner Heather Sutherland. The formidable pair have been an item for a staggering 54 years. But chatting to Gyles Brandreth on the Rosebud podcast earlier this year, the “Happy Feet” star opened up about a secret romance from yesteryears that nearly swayed her path before she found true bliss with her current partner. At 17-year-old, Miriam swooned over a married man, touting him as the most “loveliest man”.

Recalling her university days at Oxford, Miriam detailed: “The first boyfriend was a beautiful young man,” pronouncing perhaps a chance encounter as she muses, “I don’t know how I met him – I think I picked him up in the street. He was wheeling his daughter, a little baby.” The candid revelation sprung from an inquisitive Gyles hinting at what could’ve been, “He was married with a child. He was the most beautiful, loveliest man. I think if I found him earlier, I wouldn’t be gay – I don’t know.” Confessing that their relationship never blossomed more than a friendship, Miriam explained: “No, I just fell for him. I loved him and I never stopped. I remember him affectionately.” Miriam went on to explain how she was ‘heartbroken’ when the man disclosed that he was married and said they could no longer be friends, adding how she “Never had another man again”.

With the star set to be seen exploring Australia in her new TV show, it comes after she claimed she would ‘never’ go Down Under to appear on t I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, because she has ‘class’. The actress opened up last year on how she had been offered big money deals to appear on the gruelling ITV show – as well as BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. But she said she had turned down both – deciding to rake in some extra cash by writing a book instead. Appearing on the podcast Dish from Waitrose, hosted by Nick Grimshaw and Angela Harnet, the latter probed Miriam on whether she had been asked to compete in Strictly Come Dancing. Miriam replied: “Yeah, they must have been f****** nuts. And they asked me to go in the jungle.” The actress then revealed she turned both down and took aim at I’m A Celebrity as she said: “I’ve got class, love. I’m not doing that.” A New Australian Adventure airs Friday, 2 August at 9 pm on BBC Two and BBC iPlayerStory SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
