Privacy NoticeEx-EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite, 53, is starring in the new Channel 5 series The Wives, and has opened up about how she felt a deep connection with her character Sylvie on a personal level. “Sylvie talks about the fact that she’s having a midlife crisis. I don’t think she really is. I think she’s having a rebirth post divorce and this is the beginning of her new life. So I could really relate to that,” Tamzin admits, reflecting on her own life after her divorce from Lucifer star Tom Ellis, with whom she shares children Flo, 16, and Marnie, 12. The actress isn’t the only soap legend in the mix; she’s teamed up with Jo Joyner, famous for her role as Tanya Branning in EastEnders, and Coronation Street’s Angela Griffin, known for her turn as Fiona Middleton. The series charts the story of sisters-in-law Sylvie, Beth (played by Jo), and Natasha (played by Angela) as they embark on their yearly getaway to Malta, except this time, circumstances have dramatically changed. Sylvie is embracing single life, Natasha is secretly battling financial woes, and their friend Annabelle (portrayed by Christine Bottomley) has been mysteriously absent since vanishing on the island the previous year.

Despite the police believing that Annabelle had an accidental fall from a cliff after discovering her phone at the scene, the group suspects there’s more to the story. Angela Griffin explains: “Their lives are not what they look like. They’re peacocky and showy about how brilliant life is, but underneath every single one of them has got a secret. They were a four, and one of those women is now missing,” she says. “We see that not all is as it seems. It’s not as clean cut as, ‘Annabelle has just disappeared or has potentially died.'” Tamzin adds, “It’s a feminine feast of friendship and fatalities with a little sprinkle of vodka and tequila. The twists and turns are quite unexpected after episode one.” Despite the turmoil that their characters endure in the six-part series, she reveals that they “had a blast” behind the scenes – especially since Tamzin and co-star Angela Griffin are besties in real life. Angela chuckles as she recalls, “Tamzin may or may not have phoned me up about the role before my agent did!” She gushes about the experience too, saying, “It’s possibly one of the best jobs I’ve done acting wise in terms of the dynamic between all of the cast, but particularly between Jo and Tam. We work so similarly to each other.” Sign up to OK!’s TV newsletter to get updates sent to your inbox for free

The fun-filled ensemble left Jo Joyner, aged 47, puzzled at their first collaboration, admitting, “To work with them was a joy. We’ve all respected each other’s careers and we were a bit surprised we hadn’t worked together yet, because we’ve all been working for so long.” The storyline heats up when Annabelle’s spouse Charlie, played by Jamie Bamber, rocks up on vacation with his new, much younger girlfriend. The sisters-in-law turn detective over his late wife’s demise, proving to be an unstoppable trio. Tamzin says, “It was lucky in a way that they got the chemistry that us three had for free because that just came with us. Because you can sometimes work with people and you don’t bounce off them like that.” While the cast is top-notch, it’s Jo who steals the show with her “drunk scenes” on the beach. Angela couldn’t help but gush about her co-star, awarding Jo the title of “best drunk actress ever” with a laugh. Tamzin humorously suggests that the show should come with a “please drink responsibly warning!”

Tamzin was also drawn to the project by more than just the chance to work with close friends abroad. She describes her character Sylvie as ‘Samantha from Sex And The City’ and highlights the importance of representation on TV, saying, “The majority of the people that are watching TV are women of a certain age and we don’t often see ourselves on TV. For me, I thought these relationships are brilliant,” she explains. “I love the women, I love the fact that it’s about the women and I love their relationships. I thought the characters were really well drawn.” Angela, 48, points out the rarity of shows like theirs, noting, “We’ve got a lot of murders. We’ve got a lot of thrillers, but three women sitting down in a room and talking and chatting about where they are, there’s very little. There isn’t much like this on TV at the moment.” She believes that women in the same age bracket will find The Wives relatable, just as she connected with her own character. “I recognised all of the women, I recognised the stages they were all in… empty nest, the kids have grown up,” Angela reflects. “What happens to women when all of a sudden you’ve got to redefine who you are in the world, who are you when you’re not being called Mum left, right and centre?” “They’ve all got such brilliant, incredible lives, but they’ve all got s**t going on, which is basically the world. Everyone can relate to that.” The Wives starts Monday 16th September 9pm Channel 5 & My5Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
