Privacy NoticeThe familiar face of Toby Jones returned to our screens tonight as his ITV drama Mr Bates vs the Post Office picked up the NTA for Best New Drama. He used the win to champion the cause he embodied on the show, saying: ‘It’s a great opportunity to review pressure on the government, the new government, to recognise the postmasters before the end of the year. But while he is one of Britain’s finest actors, fans might not know that he also has star-studded parents. Toby, 58, who holds an OBE, is best known for being the voice of Dobby in the Harry Potter films from 2002 to 2010. Other huge roles from the actor include Percy Alleline in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Claudius, the announcer for The Hunger Games. In Mr Bates vs the Post Office, Toby starred as Alan Bates, a crusading former sub-postmaster.

The cast, alongside Toby, includes Katherine Kelly, Amy Nuttall, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Monica Dolan, Lia Williams, Alex Jennings and Will Mellor. There are four episodes in the series with all of them available to watch on ITVX now. But away from TV fame, Toby is from a star-studded family as both his parents were actors. His late father Freddie Jones is known for his role as Sandy Thomas on the hit ITV soap Emmerdale. Freddie played the role of Sandy from November 2005 before he departed in March 2008, only to return again in February 2009. After a long stint on the show, he said goodbye to the soap and aired his final scenes in February 2018. Over a year later in July 2019, Freddie died at the age of 91. Toby’s mother Jennifer Jones was also an actress but gave up her career to raise her three sons, Toby, Rupert and Casper. Toby hails from Hammersmith, London and studied drama at the University of Manchester from 1986 to 1989. The following year he enrolled at L’École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris until 1991.

Just a year later he made his acting debut in Sally Potter’s film Orlando in 1992. He has since starred in more than 20 films and made more than 40 TV appearances, including in Sherlock, Doctor Who, The Long Shadow and Midsomer Murder. In 2001, he made his stage debut in the West End comedy show The Play What I Wrote. For his role as Arthur, he earned himself a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. In 2015, he married his wife Karen Jones. Sign up to OK!’s daily newsletter to get updates sent to your inbox for free
