Privacy NoticeA Place In The Sun’s Jean Johansson has opened up about her recent diagnosis of presbyopia, a condition that causes a gradual loss of the eyes’ ability to focus on nearby objects. The 42 year old presenter admitted she had ignored signs of deteriorating eyesight for years before finally getting an eye examination. Speaking about the impact of her diagnosis, Jean revealed that getting a diagnosis had been “life-changing” and expressed her confusion over why it took her so long to seek answers. “I’m not entirely sure why it took me so long to admit I needed glasses,” she added, attributing part of her reluctance to accepting the ageing process and the inevitable deterioration of vision that comes with it.

Jean is now embracing her new specs, saying they’ve opened up a “enjoying a whole new world of not having to squint” when reading scripts or using her phone, reports Coventry Live. Writing in her Sunday Mail column, she said: “I’m [also] no longer stealing my mum’s glasses to read a menu in a restaurant.” While she joked that she might not join Jennifer Aniston and Rihanna as one of the world’s sexiest spec wearers, she loves her new frames and thinks they look great. Now understanding the cause of her vision problems, Jean is urging others who may be neglecting their eye health to get tested without delay. Presbyopia, as explained by the Mayo Clinic, is an unavoidable part of ageing, typically starting to affect people in their early to mid-40s and likely to progress until around 65. “You may become aware of presbyopia when you start holding books and newspapers at arm’s length to be able to read them,” the website explains. “A basic eye exam can confirm presbyopia. You can correct the condition with eyeglasses or contact lenses. You might also consider surgery.” People with presbyopia might find themselves squinting while reading at a regular distance, battling blurred vision, and even feeling eyestrain or headaches after doing close-up work. These symptoms often get worse when someone is tired or in dim lighting. Jean’s health update comes after she spoke to OK! in March about her life as a working parent, admitting that she sometimes misses out on is the simple pleasures of family life, such as her son Junior’s sporting endeavour and school activities. “I miss out on a lot at home, including Junior’s football games or school concerts,” she said. “It’s frustrating, but that’s a juggle for any working mum.”
