Privacy NoticeAll Creatures Great and Small returns for a new season and at Skeldale House spring has officially sprung. For Helen, she’s juggling her time between the animals and her four-month-old baby Jimmy. “Helen’s really trying to navigate the full time job of motherhood single handedly,” shares Rachen Shenton, who portrays Helen. “Of course she’s got support from her Skeldale family, Siegfried Farnon, Mrs Hall and Richard Carmody, but Jimmy is taking up most of her time. “Working with a baby makes things very efficient,” admits Rachel. “You have to nail the scene because the baby can only work for a certain amount of time. When we rehearse, we use a jelly baby and it feels like a stone, it’s so heavy. So I prefer working with a real baby because they’re so much lighter. I love working with babies, we worked with three in the series, and two in the Christmas special.”

The All Creatures Great and Small cast are reuniting for another series

Meanwhile, after a heartfelt reunion at Christmas, Helen’s husband, James Herriott, is away serving in the RAF. “I’ve learned how to do the salute now,” reveals Nicholas Ralph, who plays James. “We filmed in Lincolnshire surrounded by 30 extras with World War Two planes which was incredible. It feels like a new chapter for James, something to get stuck into.” “But he is having a tricky time. And when he delivers a calf in the first episode of this series, it brings back a lot of memories for him. It’s a reminder for James; being a vet is what he does best and it’s what he loves to do.”

Tristan Farnon and his brother Siegfried Farnon are reunited

Amongst the Skeldale family, a familiar face will also return to Yorkshire, Siegfried’s younger brother, Tristan Farnon, is back after two years away. “I’ve said it a million times, but I think the show missed Tristan, and we really missed Callum,” says Nicholas. “It feels like a boost to the show. We know James and Tristan have got a wonderful relationship as well.” “Callum came back and it was like he’d never been away,” adds Rachel. The cast admit they love returning to film a new series, especially in the town of Grassington that doubles as Darrowby. But Nicholas reveals some of the locals have mixed feelings about their presence.

James Herriot is serving in the RAF when we return to the show

“There’s one woman who I take my hat off to,” Nicholas explains. “When we film, we can get a bit disruptive. We hold up cars and pedestrians and most people are obliging. But there’s one woman who, regardless of what’s happening, will pelt straight through.” “Everyone is lovely though,” says Helen. “I love it when fans hand us their dogs to take a picture with.” Watch All Creatures Great and Small on Thursday 19 September, 9pm, Channel 5Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
