Privacy NoticeDeath in Paradise’s Ralf Little is currently leading the odds as the potential new face of Midsomer Murders, should Neil Dudgeon decide to hang up his detective hat. Although Neil isn’t looking to leave the ITV drama just yet, speculation is rife about who might step into the role of DCI John Barnaby. The betting world is abuzz with predictions, placing Ralf Little at a strong 5/1, after the actor recently left the role of detective Neville Parker on Death in Paradise. He is closely followed by Vera’s Kenny Doughty – meanwhile, Betway has even tipped other actors for the coveted spot, including Daniel Casey at 6/1, Samuel Barnett at 10/1, and both Nicholas Lyndhurst and Martin Clunes of Doc Martin fame at longer odds of 20/1.

Chad Yeomans from Betway shared his insights: “We make the ex-Vera star Kenny Doughty the favourite at 4/1 to replace Neil Dudgeon should he ever stand down as DCI John Barnaby. Next in the betting comes Death in Paradise star Ralf Little at 5/1, who was hugely popular in his role as DI Neville Parker before his surprise departure from the show earlier this year.” Chad also mentioned: “Rounding out the top three in the betting market is Daniel Casey at 6/1, who our traders think could be in line to make a return to Causton as the main character! Or could the legendary John Nettles at 80/1, who recently turned down a cameo role in a proposed remake of Bergerac, be tempted to play the famous detective chief inspector one more time?” reports the Mirror. Amidst all the bookies’ chatter, fans are also throwing their own guesses into the mix, wondering if a well-known face might be the next lead detective John Barnaby. Over at the Midsomer Murders fan zone, viewers are buzzing with speculation. One shared their dream scenario on Facebook saying: “If Neil Dudgeon ever retired from the show, I think we should bring back Daniel Casey in his place as Chief Inspector Gavin Troy.”

Someone even fancied a bit of a soap opera twist: “Also, Laura Howard as Cully Barnaby whose husband died and comes back to town meets Gavin and strikes up a romance, and marries. She becomes his sidekick and the Barnaby in the story that’s needed.” Not everyone was thrilled with the idea though, as one fan scoffed: “Oh heavens,” and another flatly rejected: “No not Gavin Jones.” Meanwhile, there were those who didn’t fuss over specific characters, like the person who chimed in: “I don’t care as long as the show carries on,” and another who couldn’t hold back their enthusiasm: “Yes, I would love him back.” Neil Dudgeon himself dished out some inside scoop recently to Radio Times magazine about taking over from John Nettles. It wasn’t a walk in the park for him, as he confessed: “It was hard at the beginning because John [Nettles] had done it for 14 years,” revealing his initial jitters. And he added candidly: “If they’d cancelled me after one series, that would have been embarrassing! It gets easier, but I try to keep it fresh. Even if I’ve gone through the script 50 times, I’ll look at it again and have another thought. It’s still extremely pleasant and I’m extremely grateful.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
