Privacy NoticeRichard Madeley was pictured shedding a tear during an emotive Channel 5 documentary as he reflected on his and wife Judy Finnigan’s dazzling television careers. During the film, the beloved TV host, who is now a familiar face on Good Morning Britain, took a nostalgic trip down memory lane, remembering his humble start at Granada before rising to fame on This Morning. It was when he spoke about taking over Sir Terry Wogan’s show on Radio 2 after the legendary broadcaster passed away in 2016 that Richard became notably emotional. Wiping away tears, he shared with viewers: “None of us saw this coming,” recounting how he felt live on air following the death of the legendary broadcaster at 77.

Even after eight years, it’s clear the memory still deeply affects Richard. In the comfort of the couple’s London home, Judy offered support as he opened up about the intimidating prospect of filling the shoes of such a broadcasting titan. Recalling stepping into Terry shoes on air, Richard revealed: “It was all very emotional. It went fine, and the guests spoke beautifully, so I didn’t have to do much, thankfully,” reports Gloucestershire Live. As the programme wound down, Richard recalled witnessing a silent congregation through the studio glass: “Going off air, I was looking through the glass into the gallery. It was full of Radio 2 staff presenters, the head of the station, producers. It was full of them, all watching in silence.” Reflecting on his effort, he said: “I just remember thinking, ‘I don’t think I let Terry down there’.” before Judy reassured him by saying, “You did very well.” Along with the heartfelt memories of his time at Radio 2, Richard also reminisced about his early career at Granada – where he met his now wife Judy, who he married in November 1986 before hosting their daytime show Richard & Judy from 2001 until 2009. The couple have two children – Chloe and Jack Madeley, along with Judy’s twins from a previous relationship, Dan and Tom Henshaw.

He explained how at Granada, it was tradition for newcomers to be assigned a ‘mum’ or ‘dad’ to help them settle in. “At Granada when someone new arrived, someone was appointed as their dad or their mum to show them round the canteen, the toilets and all that. So Judy was my ‘mum’.” Despite being married since 1986, Richard revealed it wasn’t until a charity event in 1988 that Granada finally allowed them to join forces professionally. This opportunity led them to their iconic stint as co-hosts on This Morning, marking the start of their successful journey as a presenting duo.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
