Privacy Notice Philip Schofield is returning to our screens in Cast Away on Monday 30 September, a reality series in which he has filmed himself surviving alone on an island near Madagascar. A sneak peek at the first episode reveals that things get difficult early on as the former This Morning presenter, stranded and having to fend for himself, finds his camp under threat on the first night as a storm moves in. After having built a fire and erected his tent, and having hunted for food, Philip talks to the night vision camera, saying he wants to “catch a fish that makes me feel full” and then goes to sleep as the wind is whipping his shelter. However, at 12.34am, he shouts “bloody hell!” and announces that “disaster has struck.” “Howling wind blowing through everything and it’s taken out all the front. This is about to tear itself to pieces,” he says, pointing at one part of the tent, “and there’s still every possibility that it will. Wasn’t expecting that!”

Philip spent ten days on the remote island for the new three part series, and the first trailer for the show revealed that he would be discussing “his side of the story” about his dismissal from his presenting job at ITV during the experience. In the clip, he says: “I’ve been cast away on a desert island completely on my own. All I have is camera gear, I can say whatever I want about whoever I want. It’s my chance to tell my side of my story. I know what I did was unwise, but is it enough to absolutely destroy someone?” before he breaks down in tears. The host left ITV early last year following a scandal that he had been having an affair with a much younger co-worker and Cast Away marks his first comeback attempt. However, the emotion-packed clips from the show have failed to impress some of his former ITV colleagues. On Wednesday, Eamonn Holmes, who has been loudly critical of Philip in the past, did not look impressed when news of Cast Away was announced on GB News’ breakfast show. Guest Dr Renee Hoenderkamp commented: “Is this not just the chance for a narcissist to have more me time on screen?” Guest Norman Baker sarcastically said “my heart bleeds” after host Isabel Webster countered that Philip had lost all his presenting gigs following the scandal and had to leave social media. It was after Norman’s comment that Eamonn laughed and added: “Very good.” Sign up to OK!’s TV newsletter to get updates sent to your inbox for free

Loose Women panellist Nadia Sawalha also weighed in about the trailer for Cast Away during her Coffee Moaning podcast. “It was popping onto phones all over the place yesterday and everyone was aghast. “When I was first sent it, there was no message with it, so I thought it was a joke,” she said. “First of all, I cringed. If I’m honest, I absolutely cringed when I saw that video. I thought ‘that is so embarrassing’. That was my first feeling.” However, in an interview with The Sun, This Morning guest Vanessa Feltz was more supportive, saying: “I’m surprised, but delighted, and I hope it’s great entertainment, and I hope that he achieves from it whatever he wants to achieve.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
