Privacy NoticeIt’s a situation many parents can identify with at this time of year. That feeling of loss and utter devastation when their son or daughter finally moves out of the family home as they head off to university. This year, stars including Myleene Klass and Amanda Holden said they were utterly bereft when their daughters upped sticks for college, and last year Ruth Langsford said she was in tears with her ‘heart ripped out’ as her son Jack left home. Back in 2022, Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid opened up to OK! about dealing with the complex emotions surrounding empty nest syndrome. The 53 year old TV star’s eldest son Sam, then 20, had left her family home in south London for university and she was left devastated about lthe oss of time she gets to spend with him.

Susanna told us: “He’s gone – he’s gone to uni, but he does come back from time to time, which is a total pleasure. In fact he came back over the weekend without warning – no head’s up, which was absolute bliss. I absolutely love it. You cry your heart out because you know all that regular time with your children is gone and that’s really sad and then it’s dependent on them and their desire to come home. Lots of good home cooked food helps.” Susanna – who is also loving mum to Finn and Jack, who she shares with ex Dominic Cotton – added that she has made the decision to scale back her illustrious 28-year career to make the most of the time she has left at home with them. Susanna added: “They need me more in a way now that they are teenagers and because they’re on the route to leaving home, I feel like I just want to enjoy that as much as I possibly can. A full time job is enough – I’m not taking anything extra on.”

The presenter’s career has taken her from BBC Breakfast to GMB, while she’s also made important documentaries about serial rapists and death row inmates in the US – and managed a turn on the Strictly dance floor. Earlier this year she was heartbroken when her longtime colleague Ben Shephard left the show for a role presenting This Morning, alongside Cat Deeley, following the departure of both Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby. Phillip, who is soon to make a TV comeback, quit after admitting to an “unwise but not illegal” affair with a younger colleague.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
