Privacy Notice This Morning’s agony aunt Deidre Sanders has bravely revealed that she made a significant error when she was initially diagnosed with cancer in 2022. Appearing on the ITV daytime show, Deidre shared the devastating news that her breast cancer has returned, two years after she first opened up about her health battle with former hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield. Deidre recounted how she had visited her doctor and undergone a mammogram due to feeling “achey”, which led to her being referred to the breast clinic at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. A nurse at the clinic detected a difference in her right breast, prompting Deidre to be put on the NHS two-week cancer pathway. Deidre explained: “I was referred for a mammogram, that happened within something like 10 days. I then went on holiday, but they did find at the mammogram something called calcification which can happen in different parts of the body, but it does happen in older women’s breasts.” She continued: “Tiny, tiny little microscopic flecks of calcium but if they’re in a cluster that can be a sign of trouble and there was a cluster so they said you’re gonna have to come back for a biopsy.”

Deidre has bravely opened up about her breast cancer diagnosis, confessing she made a “big mistake” by skipping regular checks after turning 70. She shared her story to urge women over 70 to exercise their right to request mammograms: “Your automatic call for mammograms every three years stops when you’re 70, and I think I got a letter a couple of years later and I looked online and I thought, ‘ohhhh I’ll be fine’… that was a big mistake to think that,” she said, reports the Mirror. Deidre emphasised the importance of screenings: “And what I want to say to women over 70, you’ve got a right to request a mammogram so please request it. You can have a free mammogram every three years and it’s so worthwhile.”

Despite the initial fear, Deidre remains positive about her upcoming lumpectomy and radiotherapy treatment: “I think people panic at the word cancer often, and they can be scared of going to their doctor with their initial worry.” This weekend, she faces surgery with optimism: “I’ll have some radiotherapy later on but that should be that.” When Holly, a mother of three, asked how she felt about her diagnosis, Deidre responded with gratitude for the early detection: “I think I feel really, really fortunate that it’s been caught early. And I feel lucky that it’s just a lumpectomy.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
