Privacy NoticeEmmerdale’s abuse storyline around Belle Dingle and Tom King’s marriage took a dramatic turn this week, when Tom was left with an axe in the back after threatening to kill Belle. While Tom managed to survive in hospital, social media was flooded with theories as to who would take the blame for his stabbing after Belle used the axe in self-defence. From Vinnie taking the blame for Tom’s stabbing to someone else putting the axe in Tom’s back, Emmerdale fans have a number of theories around what really happened – and now the stars themselves have weighed in. Speaking to OK! at the Inside Soap Awards, Eden Taylor-Draper and James Chase spoke about the axe scene.

When asked whether it’s possible that someone else other than Belle used the axe on Tom as per one fan theory, Eden – who plays Belle – said: “I didn’t know this was a thing!” James Chase added: “Maybe someone was hiding in the corner. Maybe it was Piper the dog. Piper had the axe.” The on-screen couple opened up about what fans can expect from the storyline, teasing that Belle’s nightmare will reach new heights. “We’re about to film big stuff, which is exciting,” Eden said. James added: “Big stuff is coming up on screen as well. It’s crazy from this point on. I feel like it changed a bit [for Belle and Tom]. “The vibe has changed in a way where it feels that the conflict between them is different. It’s not as much about Tom abusing her. It’s evolved. I don’t want to say too much.”

They added that the reaction from fans to the storyline has been “amazing” over the past year. “Everyone has been so supportive and people are very engrossed in the story,” James said. Eden added: “As it progresses and we focus on different things, different people can relate to them. It’s great that we’re targeting such a wide range of people.” As for Tom’s new relationship with Amelia Spencer (Daisy Campbell), Tom said: “It’s different to the way it is with Belle. He’s aware of everyone’s opinions of him. He’s not treating Amelia in the same way – it’s a different form of manipulation. He wants somebody on his side. Daisy added: “She’s so young. She’s so much younger than him, by 10 years. She’s so much more vulnerable. There’s a lot coming.” Emmerdale airs weeknights from 7pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
