Privacy Notice A new family was added to the roster of television addicts on Gogglebox on Friday 4 October, and their first appearance divided viewers of the popular Channel 4 series. Michael and Sally and their sons Harry and Jake hail from Kent and were introduced in a new episode where they got to chat about quiz show Only Connect, the thriller series Nightsleeper and Netflix romcom Emily in Paris. However, an interaction between the family early on in the episode did not go down well with some viewers. Michael told his teenage sons they could have been driving since they were 16 years old if they had chosen to, as they would have been able to obtain agricultural driving licences to drive tractors on the family farm. Jake then scoffed: “I can go and pick up my girl on a tractor.” Some fans of the show decided this exchange meant the family were “posh” and took to social media to complain.

“Posh folk aren’t really for #Gogglebox well apart from Giles and Mary” wrote one viewer, while another asked: “Why add yet another posh family?” One fan decided teens Jake and Harry reminded them of Dawson and Pacey from 1990s teen drama Dawson’s Creek, writing “I knew I’d seen these 2 before” alongside a photo from the classic show, while a fourth described the family as “The new waitrose family on #gogglebox.” Happily, some viewers were pleased to meet the new arrivals to the Gogglebox team and defended their inclusion. “Reading some posts, Don’t like the new family, no newbies, etc. Get stuffed and stop being territorial #Gogglebox,” said one, while another was simply excited enough to write: “NEW PEOPLE!!!” One of the shows all the Goggleboxers gave their opinion on was Cast Away, the Channel 5 series that followed Phillip Schofield ’s adventure on a deserted island over three episodes last week. Pete and Sophie were quick to comment after watching Phillip talk about being “thrown under a bus”. Sign up to OK!’s TV newsletter to get updates sent to your inbox for free

Sophie commented: “You created the bus and then put your foot down on it,” while Pete followed that up with: “You created, drove and threw yourself under the bus!” Giles and Mary, meanwhile, gave their own unique view of the series, after watching the final scene in which Phillip Schofield stripped off and flashed his bottom at the camera as he ran into the ocean. “At least Jane McDonald gives you a song at the end of her show,” deadpanned Giles.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
