Privacy NoticeStrictly Come Dancing star Samantha Quek’s husband Thomas Mairs has been cheering her all the way since she started on the hit show – to the extent that he’s been berating the judges. The millionaire property mogul and TV star (more on that later) has regularly been posting about the BBC dance contest branding Anton Du Beke “harsh” for giving wife Sam his second-lowest score of the night last month. Tom, 38, even joked about the show’s famous curse, which has seen a number of relationships crumble. Before her partner was announced he wrote: “Here’s hoping she gets Johannes as her partner.” On learning it was ripped Ukrainian dancer Nikita Kuzmin, he added sarcastically: “Thank goodness! I was worried she’d get someone young, tanned, muscley and unbelievably handsome.”

As TV host and field hockey player Sam, 35, takes to the Strictly dance floor again tonight, we take a look at their life, relationship – and Tom’s unusual path to his fortune. He was handed £1million from his dad and went on to build his own business empire, starting a student housing business by renting out a five-bedroom house to his friends. He quickly trebled the cash and now his company Antona Student Properties buys, develops and lets multiple properties in Liverpool every year, where he is now well known. He has been hailed for giving students good places to live. Sam and Tom went to the same school – Calday Grange Grammar in West Kirby – but were in different years and met for the first time in a Liverpool bar. They got engaged in 2017 and married at Chester racecourse a year later, going on to have two children Molly and Isaac, who they call Zac. She of course rose to fame thanks to sport, having to pick between football and hockey when she was 16. She chose the latter and went on to play for the Wirral, England and Great Britain. Sam later forged a successful TV career, appearing on I’m A Celeb, A Question of Sport and was one of the presenters on Morning Live, before bagging a spot on Strictly. But Tom was actually a TV star before her, appearing in a 2010 episode of The Secret Millionaire where the young entrepreneur, who was just 24 at the time, went undercover in Bootle, Merseyside. To this day he is the youngest millionaire to appear on the programme. Sign up to OK!’s daily newsletter to get updates sent to your inbox for free

Sam, whose dad was himself a multi-millionaire, lived in the suburbs but got stuck into life in inner-city Liverpool on the show, which sees the mega-rich leave their luxurious lives and pose as ordinary people visiting underprivileged communities to learn about how they live on the pretext that they’re film a documentary. At the end of each episode the person dishes out money with Tom gifting £8,500, £30,000 and in one case £10,000 a year. In 2013, Tom was named as an “exceptional graduate” of the University of Liverpool for his efforts raising the standard of student accommodation in the city. However, it’s getting closer between the pair as to who’s the richer of the two. Sam’s TV hosting gigs, promo work and the chunky appearance fee she’ll have got for I’m A Celeb and Celebrity Masterchef – not to mention her sporting income – has been estimated at around £4million. The pair have also been on TV together. They were contestants on the Fern Britton antiques show For What It’s Worth where they won the £2,500 jackpot by picking the worthless items from the valuable ones. They took the task seriously then and – judging by how outspoken Tom is over Sam’s treatment on Strictly – they’re each taking the BBC hit extremely seriously too. Strictly Come Dancing is on BBC One tonight from 6.20pm to 8.20pm
