Privacy NoticeA guest on Antiques Roadshow was left nearly speechless when his war medals were given a sky-high valuation. The beloved BBC programme returned for another episode on Sunday night (October 13), with Fiona Bruce leading the show. In this episode, Fiona and her team of experts paid a visit to the Ulster Folk Museum near Belfast, where they uncovered a variety of historical items brought in by the public. During the programme, a guest appeared with medals that once belonged to Captain Geoffrey Ingham, a veteran of the war. Expert Mark Smith was tasked with uncovering more about these war medals. He meticulously examined the medals, noting that the collection began in the early 1900s and included the last medal awarded at the conclusion of World War II.

The valuation took the guest by surprise

BBC Antiques Roadshow guest questions valuation of rare silver item

Mark commented: “It’s 45 years of active service at some point.” Geoffery had been honoured with several medals, including a Russian Award, a WWII medal for the Normandy landings, and an award for exceptional bravery, reports the Express. However, the guest was curious about the faded ribbons attached to the medals and asked Mark: “Do you have any comments on renewing the ribbons on the medals?” Before revealing the valuation, Mark responded: “Yes! Don’t ever do it, they are gorgeous as they are, however, if you were the medal collector and you wanted to buy them with those faded ribbons you’re gonna have to pay £10,000 for them.” Taken aback, the guest responded: “Really, that’s interesting.” He then added: “That’s most interesting.”

Fans at home were left gobsmacked at the valuation of the medals featured on Antiques Roadshow. One astonished fan tweeted: “No way!”  Another was touched by the connection to their own family history, commenting: “What a distinguished collection of medals. My grandfather was also at the Battle of Jutland on HMS Thunderer.” It’s not the first time that military memorabilia has fetched an eye-watering price on the show. Back in August, viewers were stunned when a medal awarded to a heroic war pigeon, who daringly delivered vital information during the 1940s, was estimated to be worth a whopping £30,000, shocking everyone including the person who brought it in.
