Privacy NoticeBeetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Rewind 36 years ago to 1988 and this trio of words were hot on the lips of movie fans everywhere thanks to the summer release of the hit comedy-horror film with the same namesake. We all remember the iconic scenes and the emotions they stirred, from the creepy shrunken head and witch doctor in the waiting room and the hilarious Day-O (Banana Boat song) dining room dance scene, to the shocking first glimpses of Beetlejuice and the hideous sandworm that still haunts us to this day. Beetlejuice felt like a deep dive into the gothic mind of director Tim Burton and set the path for more of his future work including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – all dark plotlines with oddball characters.

On reflection, the most striking thing about Beetlejuice was the stellar powerhouse line up of stars that it featured from Michael Keaton and Geena Davis to Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara. Some of these well-known faces have appeared in the new movie, at cinemas now, while others have disappeared. Whilst some of the imagery in the original film might look aged now, the effects were way ahead of their time, with the makeup design Oscar-worthy. The film even took home an Academy Award for Best Makeup at the 1989 Academy Awards. The film follows all-American couple Barbra and Adam Maitland (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin), who, following a car crash, discover they have actually died. Now living in their beloved Connecticut country home as ghosts, they are horrified to find the Deetz family moving in and turning their loving home into a modern art piece.

Attempts to scare them away don’t work, especially after they build a relationship with the daughter, Lydia – the only Deetz who can see them. The Maitlands are forced to enlist the help of a ‘bio-exorcist’ demon known as Beetlejuice to activate his ultimate scare tactics. What followed the movie was a spin-off cartoon series that aired from 1989-1991, a series of video games, and a Broadway musical, so it’s unsurprising that at long fans were treated to the sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega plays Lydia’s long suffering daughter, and former Lydia played by Winona Ryder will play her mum. Catherine O’Hara is back as chaotic Delia and of course, Michael Keaton has reprised his iconic Beetlejuice role. OK! takes a look back over our favourite stars from the show and what they’re doing now… Michael Keaton

Michael’s iconic and whacky performance as the bio-exorcist from Hell, Beetlejuice, catapulted him into superstardom, with Tim Burton so impressed with his acting skills, he hired him for Batman and again for Batman Returns. He has made us all cry in Jack Frost, jumped back into superhero roles in both Aquaman and Spiderman and has enjoyed animated adventures in Minions, Cars and Toy Story 3 and 4 – where he voiced Barbie’s Ken. He has a son, Sean Douglas, who was just 4 years old when Beetlejuice was released but he’s no stranger to the world of entertainment as a Grammy-winning songwriter and music producer. He even honoured his dad with a touching speech at Michael’s Hollywood Walk of Fame Star ceremony in 2016. Michael has wowed fans all over again with his new Beetlejuice performance, even though, like the first movie, he still doesn’t have much screen time. In the original he had 17 minutes in total, and didn’t appear until 25 minutes in. Winona Ryder

Actress Winona Ryder has gone on to have great success in Netflix smash hit Stranger Things
An icon for goth girls everywhere, a young 15 year old Winona Ryder played teenager Lydia Deetz and made white make-up, black clothing and a sassy attitude cool. As the only member of the Deetz family to see the Maitland ghosts and Beetlejuice, she played a pivotal role in the movie. The perfect fit for Tim Burton’s darker themed masterpieces, she went on to star in Edward Scissorhands and joined fellow Beetlejuice star Catherine O’Hara to lend her voice in Frankenweenie, and lately, thanked Tim for “carrying that torch for us weirdos everywhere.” Famous for also once dating Johnny Depp, fans these days have found their love for Winona renewed since her starring role in Netflix 80s-themed smash hit, Stranger Things. Playing Joyce Byers, Winona is phenomenal as the paranoid, financially -struggling single mum and has won over a brand new legion of fans. In the new movie, fans see a different, more vulnerable side to Lydia as she navigates her tricky mother-daughter relationship and finds herself forced to call on the help of Beetlejuice. Geena Davis

Geena went on to great success after playing the innocent and loving role of Barbara Maitland and has openly spoken about how she would love to reprise her character – sadly, although referenced in the newest film, she didn’t star. Starring in Thelma & Louise in 1992, she even reunited with Michael Keaton in 1994 rom-com Speechless, this time as a romantic interest. She played the first female president in Commander in Chief and the sweet mum of a mouse in the cutesy Stuart Little movies. During her Beetlejuice days, she was married to her second husband Jeff Goldblum, but they split swiftly the following year. In 2002 Geena welcomed a daughter, Alizeh, into the world with her fourth husband, plastic surgeon Reza Jarrahy, but they divorced during lockdown in 2021. The couple also had twin sons Kaiis and Kian, in 2004. Alec Baldwin

Alex has transformed from his days as hapless new-ghost, Alan Maitland. Beetlejuice was the beginning of a long career for Alex where he has spent decades in TV and film, including a popular role on US hit sitcom, 30 Rock where he won countless awards for his performance as Jack Donaghy. We’ve also most recently loved him as the iconic voice of Boss Baby, and our childhoods were filled with him running wild with a giant feline on screen in Dr Suess’ Cat in the Hat. More recently though, Alex has been navigating the fallout from the accidental shooting and death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on set of film, Rust. He was holding the gun at the time of the accident and was later charged with involuntary manslaughter in January 2023 but charges were later dropped. A dad of eight, he married wife Hilaria Baldwin in 2012. He was also married to ex-wife Kim Basinger. Catherine O’Hara

A star of the small screen originally, Catherine’s first big movie role wasn’t until in the ’80s where she starred in Martin Scorcese’s crime drama After Hours followed by a screen share with Meryl Streep in Heartburn. It was as Delia Deetz in Beetlejuice that she found herself a true household name though. After sharing her home with Beetlejuice, she moved on to voice work in The Nightmare Before Christmas and Frankenweenie, before taking a step away from Halloween and into Christmas as everyone’s favourite eccentric mum in Home Alone. She famously left her son Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin) behind every time she headed off for a family holiday. Fans love her on Schitt’s Creek as Moira Rose, a former soap star whose lavish life is turned upside down by money problems, too. Catherine met her husband Bo Welch on the Beetlejuice set where he worked as the production designer. After marrying in 1992, she had sons Matthew and Luke in 1994 and 1997.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
