Privacy NoticeWynne Evans revealed he was “heartbroken” after a joke with Katya Jones on Saturday evening’s Strictly Come Dancing led to uproar from viewers. In one moment, Wynne could be seen trying to give Katya a high five, although she rejected the gesture and seemed to roll her eyes. Later, she was seen moving his hand from her waist. The Mirror’s TV editor Nicola Methven was in the audience and here’s what she had to say: “For those of us in the audience, and likely many viewers at home, it was evident that the entire incident was merely some playful antics gone awry. I was certain it wasn’t genuine. The giveaway? The fact that Katya not only threw her arms around Wynne’s neck but also jumped on him, wrapping her legs around his waist. “There’s no way she would have done that if she truly perceived him as a creepy sexual harasser. Absolutely no chance. Case dismissed. So, the high-five moment and the sneaky hand-on-the-waist gesture were just the pair sharing an inside joke. Ha, ha, ha. But in front of live TV cameras – have they lost their minds?

“One can’t help but ponder what was going through their minds when they chose to act out in such a manner while the nation watched. “The show is under more scrutiny than ever before following the fallout from the bullying scandals involving departed pro dancers Giovanni Pernice and Graziano di Prima. It’s coming under intense fire amid the accusations of bad behaviour – with many of Amanda Abbington’s complaints saying the behaviour was sexual in nature. So you’d have to have had a lobotomy to think that groping someone while the nation looks on is a) not going to be noticed and b) going to be dismissed as a bit of fun. “As Wynne has now discovered, to his cost, it only takes one clip to go viral, with no context, to make you look like a horrible predator, operating in plain sight. “To be clear, I don’t think he is, remotely, that person. Wynne and Katya have been left reeling over just how much their jokey bantz has backfired. But he is a BBC radio presenter and she is a seasoned pro on the Saturday night show (who’s been caught out with scandals in the past) so you’d really think each of them would have known better.”

Nicola added: ” Quick to comment, viewers called out the behaviour as distasteful and “not at all funny”. Unfortunately, it reflects a harsh reality where too many women have experienced actual harassment dismissed as humour. Therefore, it was simple for many viewers to question their assurances that all was well.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
