Privacy Notice Professional dancer Katya Jones has stepped up to defend her Strictly Come Dancing partner Wynne Evans. The opera singer has been on the receiving end of a torrent of abuse following a ‘stupid joke that went wrong’ during the latest episode. And she has three strong words for the trolls, saying it ‘is total nonsense’. The duo left viewers puzzled after a couple of seemingly awkward ballroom exchanges, leading some to speculate that Wynne had made the Russian dancer feel uneasy. Some even suggested there was some sort of backstage feud brewing. The first incident happened when Katya seemed to brush off Wynne’s hand as he tried to place it on her waist – a move interpreted by some home viewers as discomfort.

Katya was also spotted apparently rebuffing Wynne’s high five attempt, which only added fuel to the growing rumours. Both Katya and Wynne have stood firm in their belief that this was merely a silly joke that backfired, resulting in widespread misunderstanding. They’ve now addressed the issue on BBC spin-off show It Takes Two, where Katya tried to put an end to any gossip of a feud once and for all. Katya, aged 35, confidently cleared the air with host Fleur East, that the idea that she was in any way offended ‘is total nonsense’. She clarified: “The idea that it made me feel uncomfortable or offended in any way is total nonsense, and those that have doubts, you guys have got it wrong. So hopefully this will be the end of it, and you just keep making me smile. I can’t sit here watching this man being portrayed as someone he’s not.” Opera star Wynne, famed for his Go Compare adverts, also reflected on the incident, acknowledging that upon reviewing the footage, he “could see how people may have misinterpreted it”.

In a recent update, the BBC has decided to take ‘no further action’ after checking in on both Wynne and Katya, confirming that their interactions were merely ‘silly jokes’ they had concocted together. A source from the BBC told the Mirror: “Wynne and Katya have confirmed that their interactions in the Clauditorium were silly jokes they had planned together and have apologised to anyone who may have misinterpreted them.” The pair addressed the situation on Wynne’s Instagram, where they extended their apologies. Further clarifying her stance, Katya expressed that she was neither offended nor made to feel uncomfortable by Wynne. The BBC’s welfare team has checked on the duo and currently, no additional measures are anticipated. This news emerges as the popular BBC One dance show faces intense scrutiny, with several celebrities speaking out about their experiences on the long-running series, currently marking its 20th anniversary. Wynne expressed his distress on BBC Radio Wales, stating: “I’m absolutely heartbroken by the things that have been written about me in the last day.” “It’s not nice to live in that time, but basically Katya and I are really, really close and we’re really good friends, and on Saturday night we made a stupid joke. It was a stupid joke that went wrong, okay, we thought it was funny. It wasn’t funny. It has been totally misinterpreted.”

The duo issued an explanation after the show

“Everything’s on Katya’s socials. She’s talked about it. She’s explained that it was a joke. She wasn’t offended in the least. She doesn’t feel uncomfortable. We’ve got a brilliant friendship, an absolutely tight friendship, and I’m sorry if anybody was offended by it, but it was a joke and yeah, that’s all there is, there is no real story, really. And I feel weird apologising because I feel like I’ve not really done anything.” Wynne acknowledged that he had ‘misjudged it’ during an interview on Radio Wales Breakfast before hosting his own show on the station. He also confirmed his continued enthusiasm for participating in Strictly, saying: “I’m having the best time of my life. I just don’t want this to be the bit that people remember.” The radio host also expressed his frustration with the ongoing controversy, stating it was becoming “tedious”, and invited listeners to tune in to Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two for further discussion. On Sunday, Wynne and Katya took to Instagram to apologise for their behaviour in a video, saying they were “just messing around in the Clauditorium on Saturday night and just want to say sorry. It was a silly joke”. In another incident from the same evening, Jones seemed reluctant to high-five her celebrity partner. The caption accompanying their video clarified that the “high 5’s is a running joke”. Saturday saw the pair achieve their highest score yet, earning 34 points from the judges for their tango to Abba’s Money, Money, Money.
