Privacy NoticeAfter winning a landslide election victory, Keir Starmer became Britain’s 58th Prime Minister – and has now met with King Charles to ‘officially’ mark the occasion. The Labour leader accepted an invitation from the King to meet and it looks like one rather ‘freaky’ royal honour could be on the cards for him, following his new position. If previous Prime Minister traditions are anything to go by, a trip to Royal hotspot Balmoral Castle could be on the cards. Following in the footsteps of previous country leaders, Keir and his family – including his wife Victoria and his son and daughter, if they choose to – will reportedly be invited to spend a few days there with the Royals during the summer. Balmoral Castle is located in Royal Deeside and was bought by Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert in 1852 from the Farquharson family. It’s also a place for which the late Queen had a deep affection for in Scotland.

Previous incumbents of Number 10 have had mixed feelings about their own visits, however. Margaret Thatcher, for example, likened her Balmoral trips to “purgatory” and Tony Blair described it as “a vivid combination of the intriguing, the surreal and the utterly freaky”, claiming he only survived the weekend with the help of strong alcoholic drinks. In fact, Tony’s youngest child, Leo, was conceived at the royal residence after his wife, Cherie, left her contraception in London following the “sheer embarrassment” of the staff unpacking her wash bag the year before. Then, in contrast, David Cameron, recalled the “bliss” of walking the Aberdeenshire hills without his close protection team. He wrote at length about his relationship with royalty in his 2019 memoir For the Record, saying he “lapped up the Balmoral experience”.
Keir and Victoria want to keep their kids out of the limelight

Ahead of his Royal holiday, Keir is set to move into 10 Downing Street with his family. But a clip from Sky TV’s Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips last January explained why Keir and his wife, Lady Victoria, never put their two teen children in the spotlight. During the clip, the reason becomes clear, as Keir makes a simple, six-word statement about this ‘worry’, saying: “I’m desperately trying to protect them.” He explained: “Vic, my wife, is my complete support and partner in this… we’ve got two relatively young children – it impacts them all the time, every single day. All that I do, I talk through with Vic… I’m not sure she signed up for this… the only thing that worries me is the children. They’re 13 and 15, that’s delicate ages – we don’t name them in public, we don’t do photographs… I’m desperately trying to protect them and I do worry about that.”Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
