Privacy Notice Prince Harry reportedly had a frosty three-word response for football legend David Beckham after the star turned up to show his support at the Invictus Games in Australia. The pair had previously enjoyed a strong connection, with Victoria and David even opening their sprawling six-bedroom Beverly Hills home to Meghan Markle before her royal wedding. However, it seems their friendship may have simmered somewhat, and royal commentator Emily Andrews has revealed a particularly icy encounter from 2018 between the pair during the esteemed Invictus Games in Sydney, an event personally extended by the Duke of Sussex, 39, himself. Shedding light on a strained period in their relationship, Emily shared that David, who was a VIP guest at the couple’s wedding earlier that year, had been personally invited by Harry to experience the Invictus Games, an international sports competition for wounded servicemen and women founded by Harry in 2014.

This was meant to be a highlight of the Sussexes’ first official tour of Australia, reports the Express. However, the atmosphere shifted when David arrived in Sydney only to find that Harry appeared to be avoiding him. Writing for Woman magazine, Emily said that a source claimed: “Becks was personally invited and duly came, along with sons Cruz and Romeo. When he arrived in Sydney, he asked what Harry’s schedule was so he could attend the same events.” According to reports, a shocked Harry allegedly asked: “What the f**k? He should be coming to support the games, not have his pictures taken with me.”

A source claimed: “When we pointed out that having a picture of them together would be great for Invictus coverage, he then said he never wanted to be in a picture with him. That then meant a ridiculous two-step to try and ensure that they were never pictured together.” A source also detailed an incident at the wheelchair basketball event where David was seated among dignitaries, and Harry and Meghan were supposed to join. “So a whole area on the other side of the court had to be cleared of spectators and filled with Australian military, so Harry and Meghan could sit there instead,” they claimed.

Reports suggested that the royal ‘snub’ might have been due to the new Duchess’s aversion to any limelight shared with Victoria Beckham during her first royal tour. It was rumoured that the Sussexes’ split from the Beckhams sprang from Meghan’s suspicion that they were leaking stories to the press. A source told The Sun in 2020: “Harry was very polite, but obviously it was a pretty awkward exchange and David was mortified. Inexplicably, [Meghan] feared Victoria was behind it – I mean, the idea that Victoria Beckham would be personally ringing journalists to give them a scoop is ridiculous – and spoke to Harry about it. “Harry is very protective of Meghan, and decided to deal with the matter head-on, by directly contacting his good pal, David. He quickly put Harry right, and the two men agreed to move on – but it certainly made things awkward for a while.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
