Privacy NoticeThroughout her lifetime, the late Queen was embraced by close friends and loved ones whose constant love and support played a significant role in her historic reign. Lady Sarah Chatto, niece to Queen Elizabeth II and daughter of Princess Margaret, was one such figure who was often spotted at her aunt’s side. From her childhood spending large periods of time at Buckingham Palace, Lady Sarah was adored by the Queen. As well as being a firm favourite, Sarah has built a wonderful family of her own with devoted husband, Daniel Chatto. And, as the pair celebrate their milestone 30th wedding anniversary on Sunday, 14 July, exactly who are they and why are they so beloved in royal circles?

Lady Sarah Frances Elizabeth Chatto was born at Kensington Palace on May 1, 1964. She is the second child and only daughter of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones, famously known as the Earl and Countess of Snowdon. She married Daniel Chatto at St Stephen’s, Walbrook in London on July 14, 1994 and the couple have two sons together, Samuel David Benedict Chatto (b. 1996) and Arthur Robert Nathaniel Chatto (b. 1999). Sarah’s bond with her late aunt, saw her be one of the very few people who would accompany the monarch to the secluded Craigowan Lodge near Balmoral – evidence that the Queen truly adored Sarah.

It is believed that out of all of King Charles’ cousins, it is Lady Sarah Chatto with whom he enjoys the closest relationship, the pair having reportedly spent countless hours painting together at Balmoral over the years. Lady Sarah has been an important figure in King Charles’ life outside of their shared passions, having served as a bridesmaid at his wedding to Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 and as godmother to his son, Prince Harry. Sarah’s popularity with other members of the Royal Family is also apparent, as she was also chosen to act as godmother to Prince Edward’s daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, and to the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester’s daughter, Lady Rose Gilman.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond previously spoke to OK! about Lady Sarah, saying: “I’ve always liked Lady Sarah Chatto, I think she has just got on with her life with very little fuss and not too much bother. She’s had a secure and and loving marriage with Daniel and the late Queen did adore her. “The Queen loved Princess Margaret hugely and was obviously so saddened by her early loss but remained very close with Sarah her whole life. They used to go to Craigowan Lodge in Balmoral and spend time together there whenever they could.” Speaking back in 2016 about the relationship between her late mother and aunt while watching a black and white clip of them acting out a song, Sarah said: “Singing must have been a huge part of their lives because it’s something that they both shared… I remember hearing them singing together, it was very moving – something that you don’t forget.”

Sarah is also incredibly dear to the King, as Jennie added: “I think she also has a very close relationship with Charles thanks to their shared passions for painting and walking. They do sit down together whenever they can, it doesn’t happen all the time but they have a very close relationship.” Lady Sarah Chatto, who attended Bedales boarding school in Hampshire, has been nurturing her artistic flair for years. Since 1995, she’s been showcasing her artwork at The Redfern Gallery in London, choosing to exhibit under her maiden name, Sarah Armstrong-Jones.

In early 2022, King Charles had the pleasure of seeing 79 of his watercolour paintings on display at The Garrison Chapel in Chelsea. Previously known as the Prince of Wales, he shared his passion for painting on an exhibition note, explaining that it “refreshes parts of the soul which other activities can’t reach”. He elaborated: “You become increasingly aware of things that may have escaped your attention previously the quality of light and shade, of tone and texture and of the shape of buildings. It all requires the most intense concentration and consequently is one of the most relaxing and therapeutic exercises I know.” “In fact, in my case, I find it transports me into another dimension which, quite literally, refreshes parts of the soul which other activities can’t reach. I took up painting entirely because I found photography less than satisfying.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
