Privacy NoticeIf you’ve ever dreamt of working with the royals, you’re in luck as Prince William and Kate Middleton are on the hunt for a new staff member to join their team at Kensington Palace. The Royal couple recently advertised for an Assistant Private Secretary to help plan and deliver their public engagements in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, with a special emphasis on Wales. However, there’s a catch if you’re hoping to land this role. The focus on Wales means that applicants must have conversational Welsh skills as a minimum, with fluent written and spoken Welsh being a plus for any applicant.

The secretary will also need to have a solid understanding of Welsh communities, affairs, government, and business, along with excellent communication skills and a proven ability to build productive relationships with a wide range of individuals and institutions, reports the Mirror. While only about 891,800 people speak Welsh, or Cymraeg as it’s known, the language has a surprising Royal connection. King Charles famously studied for weeks ahead of his investiture as the Prince of Wales back in 1969 to master the language in respect for the nation he was set to serve.

Both Prince William and his wife Kate also share a strong attachment to Wales – it was where William began his RAF rescue pilot career on Anglesey island, not to mention the location of their first marital home following their glamorous 2011 nuptials. After taking up his title as Prince of Wales in 2022, after his father’s ascension to the throne and the passing of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, William displayed an avid interest in learning Welsh. In fact, immediately after the mourning period concluded, he went to Wales along with his wife to mingle with locals in Swansea and voice his affection for the nation. The Prince of Wales’ language learning endeavours were revealed by Rev. Steven Bunting, who welcomed the Royal couple in Swansea.

As he informed PEOPLE: “He talked about learning Welsh and shared some Welsh phrases he’s trying to do,” going on to unveil that the Royal has been practising phrases like “paned” (meaning cup, typically of tea) and “bara brith” (traditional Welsh tea bread). The news comes after it was reported that the Prince and Princess of Wales’ children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, were being taught Spanish by their nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo. Maria, who has worked for the family since 2014, hails from the city of Palencia in Spain and is understood to be teaching the young royals the language.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
