Privacy NoticePrince Michael of Greece, the first cousin of Prince Philip and the last remaining grandson of George I, has sadly passed away at the age of 85. The royal, who was a renowned writer and historian known as Michel De Gres, died in an Athens hospital, it was announced on Sunday, 28 July. The funeral for Prince Michael is set to take place in the Greek capital on Thursday, 1 August. He was famously married to Marina Karella, an acclaimed painter and sculptor, for whom he renounced his right to the Greek throne in 1965. Born in 1939, ahead of a significant shift in Europe and the Greek Royal Family, Michael was the only child of Prince Christopher and his second wife, Princess Francoise d’Oleans of France. His father tragically died at just 51 in 1940 after suffering from a short illness, and his mother passed away in 1953, leaving him an orphan by the time he was 14.

Michael and his wife had two children, Princess Olga of Savoy-Aosta and Princess Alexandra of Greece. After studying political science in Paris, he returned to Greece for military duty, serving a term in the Hellenic Coast Guard to regain Greek citizenship. The Prince, who had a deep-seated passion for Greek history and culture, often found himself returning to the country after various periods abroad. His love affair with Greece began during his time in France throughout WWII, where he travelled extensively with his family, reports the Mirror. Despite political turmoil, Michael was the sole member of the Greek Royal Family to stay in Greece during the 1967 coup when King Constantine II’s attempt to restore democracy failed.

Gaining international acclaim as an author, Michael penned numerous bestsellers, combining his rich historical insight with a talent for storytelling. He embarked on his writing career in 1970, focusing primarily on historical themes. The internet has been awash with tributes, as people expressed their sorrow at Michael’s passing at the age of 85. A heartfelt message shared on X read: “Extremely sorry to hear of the death of Prince Michael of Greece, aged 85. The Prince was the last male first cousin of Prince Philip. The only other alive first cousin of Philip is now Lady Pamela Hicks. Michael was a first cousin once removed of King Charles.
