Privacy NoticePrince Harry and Meghan Markle have begun their four day tour of Colombia by meeting the country’s vice president in capital city Bogota. Vice President Francia Marquez is the first black woman to occupy the office, and she was pictured embracing Meghan and greeting the couple. Meghan and Harry then enjoyed tea, coffee and a traditional Colombian cheese bread called pandebono with the vice president, before exchanging gifts to mark the start of their tour. Before their arrival, Francia Marquez said in a statement that: “They will have the exceptional opportunity to engage with leaders, youth, and women who embody the aspirations and voices of Colombians committed to progress. In addition to these meaningful interactions, the Duke and Duchess will experience the rich heritage of Colombia.” Francia Marquez previously stated that she thought a visit from Megan would “strengthen so many women around the world,” and that she invited the couple to Colombia after watching their Netflix documentary and being “deeply moved” by their story. At a press conference, she said: “How did I get to know Meghan and Harry? I first encountered them through the media, and I particularly watched the Netflix series about their lives and their story, which deeply moved me. It motivated me to say, ‘This is a woman who deserves to visit our country and share her story,’ and undoubtedly her visit will strengthen so many women around the world.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to visit three cities, including Bogota and Cartagena, and visit local schools and dignitaries. They will also meet with the Colombian Invictus team, the only country from Latin America that competes in the games, and as part of their ongoing work to combat racism, they will visit the former slave town of Palenque de San Basilio on Saturday 17 August, which is known as “a little corner of Africa” since it was founded in the 17th century by escaped slaves. The couple will also visit Cali to attend the Petronio Alvarez music festival that celebrates Afro-Colombian music and culture on their final day in the country on Sunday. A poignant link to Prince Harry’s mother has emerged as the couple begin their tour of Colombia. During her press conference, Vice President Marquez was asked about a tour Diana, Princess of Wales was due to take to Colombia shortly before she died in 1997. She said: “I think that Prince Harry being here today after that dream of his mum’s of visiting this country is an opportunity to show the best of our nation, to show who Colombians are. We are people who in the midst of adversities do everything possible to give the best of ourselves.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
