Privacy NoticeKing Charles has always been a passionate advocate for protecting the environment. He has been campaigning for climate change for over 50 years and was a true pioneer before it became the global emergency that it is today. And while the King picked up much of his inspiration from his late father, Prince Philip, he has now passed his interests onto the next generation as both of his sons have spoken about the cause. Advocating a care for the environment clearly runs in the family as Prince William launched the Earthshot Prize awards in 2020 and has also revealed that his three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, are learning to become more climate conscious.

Several members of the Royal Family have spoken openly about the need to protect the environment, whether it is through Prince William’s Earthshot Prize or King Charles’ 50 years of campaigning for climate change. But it is not just them who are actively helping to make the world a greener and better place to live. Prince Harry has also spoken out about protecting the environment and even shared a story behind the important habit that he picked up from King Charles. He also revealed that he was picked on at school for always doing it. He admitted: “I used to get taken the mickey out of at school for just picking up rubbish. I don’t go consciously looking for it. When you go for walks anywhere, if you see something, it stands out, you pick it up. It’s like I’ve literally done this because I’m programmed to do it, because my father did it. Actually, we should all be doing it.”

But Prince Harry isn’t the only one who continually picks up litter when he’s out and about. According to Prince William, his son Prince George has also started to do it, and even gets irritated by the amount left on the streets. In an interview with BBC Newscast, William said that his eldest son had been litter-picking with his school and was confused when his class returned to the same route the next day to find it was full of litter again. Speaking back in 2021, the Prince of Wales said: “So George, at school recently, has been doing litter picking. I didn’t realise, but talking to him the other day he was already showing that he was getting a bit confused and a bit, sort of, annoyed by the fact they went out litter picking one day and then the very next day they did the same route, same time, and pretty much all the same litter they picked up back again.

“And I think that, for him, he was trying to understand how and where it all came from. He couldn’t understand, he’s like ‘Well, we cleaned this. Why has it not gone away?’” William said George is “acutely aware” of how the resources he uses affect the planet, such as not overusing water and turning off light switches. Charlotte is just a bit young, she’s still not quite sure and actually Louis just enjoys playing outside the whole time – he lives outside. “But I think it is slowly dawning on them that these things matter but when you are that young, you just want to have fun and enjoy it. I feel bad because I don’t want to give them the burden of that worry.”Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
