The monarch reportedly had a soft spot for many popular shows, but there was one that stood out as her top pick. While she was also a fan of comedy series The Kumars at No. 42 – even going so far as to do impressions of the characters for her guests – another show frequently topped her list due to a personal connection with the family who own the filming location. The Telegraph reported that the late Queen was a massive fan of Downton Abbey – and delighted in pointing out any historical inaccuracies.

Fans of the hit Netflix series The Crown will recognise Lord Porchester, or ‘Porchie’. For those needing a refresher, he was one of The Queen’s closest friends and served as her racing manager. So how was he connected to Downton Abbey? He lived in and owned Highclere Castle, the primary filming location for the series, when he became the 7th Earl of Carnarvon when his father died. Given her close bond with Porchie, the Queen was often a guest at the famous residence.

Writing in his book At Home With The Queen, author Brian Hoey claimed that the monarch loved to point out any inaccuracies in the hit series. He revealed: “We were talking about Trooping the Colour and how the Queen always notices if anything is not quite right, such as one young officer she spotted wearing his medals in the wrong order not long ago. “Apparently she is exactly the same when she is watching the television. She loves watching Downton Abbey and pointing out things they have got wrong, partly because she is familiar with Highclere Castle, where it is filmed. She used to stay there as a guest of the Carnarvon family.”

Another TV show that reportedly caught the monarch’s attention was Netflix’s The Crown – the drama based on her life and her family’s. Actress Vanessa Kirby, who portrayed Princess Margaret in the first two seasons of the hit series, disclosed that a friend had heard from Princess Eugenie, the late Queen’s granddaughter, that the monarch was a fan. Vanessa gave insider details to Harper’s Bazaar about royal reactions to The Crown. She quipped: “A friend of mine was at a party and didn’t know anyone, so he sidled up to this group who were talking about The Crown. One girl said, ‘Well, my granny watches it and really likes it.’ It slowly dawned on him that the girl was Eugenie and her granny was the Queen.”

Eugenie herself has tuned into the show, mentioning, “I did watch a couple of episodes of The Crown. It is filmed beautifully. The music is wonderful, the story is beautiful. You feel very proud to watch it. I can’t speak for everyone but that’s how I felt when I watched it.” It was also reported that the Queen became a viewer after being encouraged to watch by The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. Speaking before the monarch’s passing, a close source shared: “It has been a longstanding arrangement that they drive to Windsor at the weekend to join The Queen for an informal supper while watching TV or a film. “They have a Netflix account and urged her to watch it with them.
