Privacy Notice A royal biographer has spilled the beans on why they believe Meghan Markle couldn’t adapt to royal life, in a new telly programme about the Sussexes. Prince Harry and his wife made the dramatic decision to step back from royal duties in 2020 to carve their own path. However, according to expert Anna Pasternak, the tipping point occurred almost a year earlier. In the programme Meghan and Harry: The Rise and Fall, Anna suggested that the intense scrutiny surrounding the birth of their son Prince Archie in May 2019 was the catalyst for their departure.

Speaking on the Channel 5 show, she said: “I think that started to sour things (lack of privacy after Archie’s birth) and then of course it’s easy to add the moniker that they’re entitled, they’re going to do it their way, they’re difficult, they’re not playing the royal game.” “I think there was definitely the sense that the pressure is building, cracks were starting to show and that there was a friction,” reports the Mirror. Former royal butler Paul Burrell also weighed in on why Prince Harry and Meghan decided to leave the Royal Family.

Discussing the couple’s behaviour following Archie’s birth, Burrell – who was close to Diana, Princess of Wales – commented: “Why didn’t they want to show the world their joy? They’re retreating, they’re pulling back. That’s when I thought it was going wrong.” Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from their royal roles sent shockwaves across the globe when they announced in January 2020 that they wanted to step down as senior royals only eight months after welcoming their little boy Prince Archie. Dubbed ‘Megxit’, the phrase soon buzzed across every headline, illustrating the couples wish for financial freedom and a split life between the UK and US.

The Sussexes didn’t waste time making their vision come true, settling down in sunny California shortly after their declaration, where they’ve since expanded their brood with the birth of their daughter, Princess Lilibet, in June 2021. CNN expert Sandro Monetti shed his thoughts on Harry and Meghan’s dramatic exit from royal expectations: “I never personally thought they would pull the plug. But when they did it was shocking.” He went on: “In this great soap opera that is the Royal Family, it was one of the most remarkable episodes of all time. In retrospect the clues were always there.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
