Privacy NoticePrince Harry reportedly sent a text to his brother Prince William during the Queen’s final days, but didn’t receive a reply. The Duke of Sussex and wife Meghan Markle were in London when King Charles, then still a prince, called his youngest son to inform him that Queen Elizabeth II was unwell. However, Harry almost missed the call as it came from an unknown number. Royal author Craig Brown writes in his book Voyage Around the Queen that Charles told Harry “Granny’s health has taken a turn”. Following this, Harry texted William to ask if he and Kate were planning to go to Balmoral to be with the Queen. According to Brown, there was no response. Harry also mentioned this incident in his memoir Spare, writing: “I immediately texted Willy to ask whether he and Kate were flying up. If so, when? And how? No response. Meg and I looked at flight options.” Brown further claims that Charles asked Harry not to bring Meghan to Balmoral, saying he “did not want too many people” around the Queen. After being told that Kate would stay in London, Harry reportedly responded: “Then that’s all you needed to say.”

On September 8, 2022, Prince William, Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, and Prince Andrew left RAF Northolt on a jet at 2.39pm. Meanwhile, Harry managed to charter a Cessna jet from Luton Airport. Prince Harry received a text from Meghan as his jet approached Aberdeen Airport at 6:40 pm, but it was too late; he had already seen the news of his grandmother’s passing on BBC News. According to a historic memo, the Queen’s final moments were “painless” as she “slipped away” at the age of 96. The memo, written by Sir Edward Young, the Queen’s most senior staff member, is now stored in the Royal Archives. It reads: “Dougie [Glass] in at 3.25. Very peaceful. In her sleep. Slipped away. Old age. Death has to be registered in Scotland. Agree 3.10pm. She wouldn’t have been aware of anything. No pain.” The Queen’s death certificate was signed by Dr. Douglass Glass, who had served the Royal Family for 30 years.
