Privacy NoticeIt’s been 27 years since the tragic passing of Princess Diana. The much-loved Royal died following a car crash in Paris on 31 August 1997, with her passing shocking people across the globe. Diana, known as the Princess of Wales, left behind two young sons – Prince Harry and Prince William, who were ages 12 and 15 at the time. The two Princes were understandably left devastated by their mother’s tragic passing, and have continued to honour her legacy over the years. Diana, who was just 36 years old when she passed, left a net estate of £12,966,022 after inheritance tax of £8,502,330 was deducted. Her estate was made up of stocks and shares, cash from her divorce settlement, jewellery, dresses and other belongings at her Kensington Palace apartment.

The Princess specified that the sum would be held in trust to be equally shared between Harry and William. In her original will, devised in 1993, Diana had stated that both of her sons would be given their entire share of her estate when they reach 25 years old. However, this was later changed by a variation order granted by the High Court in December 1997, after Diana’s death. Both of her wills were made public in a unique move. The changes were made to protect Harry and William, with the new will included a clause that raised the age of which they could access the capital in full to 30. It is claimed that they each inherited £8.7 million each. The will was also changed to allow each of Diana’s 17 godchildren to receive an heirloom to remember her by. Another amendment saw Paul Burrell, Diana’s butler and close aide, provided with around £62,000, while access to Diana’s wardrobe, wedding dress and intellectual property rights – copyright and trademarks and royalties from commercial use of her picture or name – was approved for use to raise money for charity or her sons.

Diana died in a car crash in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris while her driver was fleeing from the paparazzi in 1997. The crash also claimed the lives of Dodi Fayed and their driver, Henri Paul. Trevor Rees-Jones, who was a bodyguard employed by Dodi’s father, survived the accident but suffered a serious head injury. Diana’s funeral took place on 6 September 1997 and was broadcast on TV. The burial took place later that same day, with the Princess’ grave located on an island within the grounds of Althorp Park – the Spencer family home.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
