Privacy NoticeMeghan Markle’s claim that she was hastily taught to curtsey by Sarah Ferguson just before meeting the Queen has been branded as false by sceptics. The Duchess of Sussex has faced criticism from royal commentators after a clip from her old TV show ‘Suits’ surfaced, showing Meghan performing a curtsey long before her romance with Prince Harry began. Despite this, in their Netflix series, Meghan recounted being quickly coached on Royal protocol right before her first encounter with Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. In the docuseries, Meghan shared: “I mean. it’s surreal. There wasn’t like some big moment of ‘Now you’re gonna meet my grandmother’. I didn’t know I was going to meet her until moments before.”

“We were in the car and we were going to the Royal Lodge for lunch, and he [Harry] was like, ‘Oh, my grandmother is here, she’s gonna be there after church.’ I remember we were in the car, driving and he’s [Harry] like, ‘You know how to curtsy, right? ‘. And I just thought it was a joke.” Prince Harry has been candid about the quirks of royal protocol, admitting: “How do you explain that to people? How do you explain that you bow to your grandmother? And that you would need to curtsy, especially to an American. That’s weird.”

Meghan echoed the sentiment during their intimate chat with the camera, confessing: “Now I’m starting to realise this is a big deal. I mean, Americans will understand this. We have Medieval Times dinner and tournament. It was like that. Like, I curtsied as though I was like… ‘Pleasure to meet you your Majesty.’ It was so intense. And then when she left, Eugenie and Jack and Fergie say ‘you did great! ‘. Thanks. I didn’t know what I was doing.”, reports the Mirror. Harry also shared that Meghan had to quickly learn the ropes of curtseying from family members, revealing in his 2023 memoir ‘Spare’: “Fergie came outside, somewhat aflutter, and said: Do you know how to curtsy? Meg shook her head. Fergie demonstrated once. Meg imitated her.” However, following assertions in their Netflix series and Harry’s memoir that this was the moment Meghan learned how to curtsey, critics have called it out as a fib, highlighting a scene from Suits where Meghan is seen curtseying. After the clip was shared on social media, one fan labelled her “a fraud”. Another sarcastically commented: “Come on guys! She ‘forgot’ she had curtsied in the show”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
