Privacy NoticeSusannah Constantine has opened up about the time she suffered a severe wardrobe malfunction at a Royal dinner party, revealing Prince Philip came to her rescue. The Strictly Come Dancing star attended a gathering at Windsor Castle during her eight-year relationship with David Linley, son of Princess Margaret. Susannah, 62, who found fame presenting What Not to Wear alongside Trinny Woodall in the early 00s, described the incident as her “worst wardrobe malfunction” during an interview on the Dirty Mother Pukka podcast, hosted by Anna Whitehouse and Polly Hazlewood. She told the duo: “My worst was pretty heroic, actually. I was at Windsor Castle, this was when I was going out with Princess Margaret’s son, David Linley.”

Susannah said she was sat at the dinner table with Prince Philip and Prince Edward, wearing a strappy dress by designer Valentino, which she’d borrowed from her mum. Midway through her starter, Susannah recalled Prince Philip unexpectedly placing his hand on her back, leaving her surprised. “I was just sort of, you know, eating my soup and everything, and suddenly Prince Phillip put his hand on my back, and I thought, ‘Oi oi! What’s going on here?’” she said on the podcast. “And then he went round to my front, and I thought he was going for one of my boobs!” However, Philip was actually coming to help Susannah, who had unknowingly fallen out of her dress. The front of the garment had come undone, leaving Susannah’s breasts on show at the dinner table. She said: “And he lifted my dress up to recover my modesty! And because my boobs were open to the public, I was flashing to the whole room!” Sign up to OK’s royal newsletter to get updates sent to your inbox for free

Philip then proceeded to ask one of his footmen to help pin Susannah’s dress back together, before Princess Margaret stepped in to help her. Susannah recalled Philip asking a footman for a “couple of safety pins” while Margaret came over to sort out the back of her dress. Susannah dated Margaret’s son David – whose full title is David Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley – for eight years, in the 1980s and 90s. David went on to marry Serena Alleyne Stanhope in 1993 and the pair welcomed two children together. They announced they had opted to end their marriage in 2020. Meanwhile, Susannah married Sten Bertelsen in 1995 and the couple share three children – Cece, Esme and Joe.
