The popular reality series returned to E4 on Monday (March 3) night, with a fresh batch of singletons embarking on their marital journeys. As is tradition, the first episode began with the stag and hen nights, which saw the grooms and brides meet each other and share their hopes for the experiment. One cast member instantly ruffled feathers at the stag do, as 35-year-old business owner Eliot began listing his “non-negotiables” in a future wife. “I have very high standards. The way I see it is high standards are you protecting against wasting your time with the wrong person,” Eliot explained.
Married at First Sight Australia fans were unimpressed with a groom’s controversial views
He said he would not entertain the thought of a marriage with a “trashy, obnoxious” woman, and admitted that he wouldn’t go through with the ceremony if he didn’t like the look of his bride. After meeting his fellow grooms, it didn’t take long for Eliot to spark an argument after disagreeing with 38-year-old primary school teacher, Tim. While discussing relationships, Tim said that he loved to “over-care” for his partner, leading Eliot to brand him an “ick” for being so loving. “That to me is a bit of a red flag. I think it can be an ick if you are over-caring… Tell her she looks awful, trust me,” Eliot added. During the episode, MAFS fans quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their frustration over Eliot’s controversial views, with one writing: “The fact that the experts would allow someone like Eliot into the experiment speaks volumes.”
Married at First Sight Australia’s twelfth season began airing on Monday (March 3)
“Eliot needs to be careful with his words as saying stuff like that can be hurtful and have really bad consequences to someone,” another added. “If you’re going on #MAFSAU you shouldn’t be going on expecting your usual type or have huge standard levels. You’re there because everything else to this point hasn’t worked out. A lot of delus this season,” a third viewer said. Meanwhile, other viewers praised the grooms for calling Eliot out on his comments: “The men calling Eliot out on his misogynistic bulls*** immediately is what we love to see, toxic masculinity free zone! Green flags all around.” The experts paired Eliot up with 37-year-old business owner Lauren, who seemed to share many of his beliefs about traditional gender roles. They hit it off at the altar, but Lauren’s unruly sister, Tamara, threatened to ruin the day when she stormed out of the reception. As they head off on their honeymoon, will their connection grow?
