Privacy NoticeGary Oldman has just returned to our screens for the fourth season of Slow Horses. But, his life has been just as dramatic behind the scenes, too. In the Emmy-nominated spy thriller, Gary, 66, plays Jackson Lamb, head of the Slough House contingent of disgraced MI5 agents – but his roles outside of the TV show span everything from Oscar wins to blockbuster franchise favourites. Outside of the Apple TV+ show, the British actor might be best recognised across the world for playing wizard Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movies. Batman fans will also know him behind the specs as Gotham City police commissioner Jim Gordon in The Dark Knight series, opposite Christian Bale’s caped crusader. Other huge franchises to see the actor turn his chops to include Kung Fu Panda, Planet of the Apes, and even an Emmy-nominated guest appearance in Friends… as a serious actor, of course.

A chameleon of an actor, you might not even recognise him in some of his most acclaimed roles in movies such as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), Air Force One (1997), and especially his role as Winston Churchill in 2017 historical drama Darkest Hour, for which he donned prosthetics to become unrecognisable , before picking up the Oscar for Best Actor. His acclaimed acting has won him a trophy cabinet of awards – including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, three British Academy Film Awards, and nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards. In fact, his movies have been so successful, grossing more than $11 billion worldwide, that Gary is officially one of the highest-grossing actors of all time.

Laila, 79, actually got her big break into acting when her famous brother cast her in his directorial debut, Nil By Mouth, in 1997. She went on to land the Eastenders role a few years later, playing the Slater matriarch from 2000 to 2016. It’s not just Gary’s family who share the spotlight – he’s also had a host of famous exes. He wed first wife, English actress Lesley Manville in 1987, before splitting in 1990. Then, Gary married Kill Bill actress Uma Thurman in 1990, who he met on the set of 1990 crime drama State Of Grace, though the couple’s whirlwind romance ended after just two years of marriage. Gary tied the knot again a few years later in 1997 to model turned photographer Donya Fiorentino, who he met at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. That marriage also ended in divorce four years later. In 2008, Gary married singer Alexandra Edenborough, who he was with until 2015. The actor married fifth wife, writer and art curator Gisele Schmidt in 2017 – and they’re still together now. It’s not just the path to love which has been turbulent for Gary. The actor quit drinking over 26 years ago, having battled alcoholism in the 1990s. He admitted to Candis magazine: “I was drinking two bottles of vodka a day,” before explaining that he put a stop to drinking because he realised he would “die’ as a result.
