Privacy Notice This weekend sees a host of Britain’s Got Talent hopefuls performing on ITV in an attempt to hit the big time. Contestants from across the country are vying to impress judges Bruno Tonioli, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell enough to bag a spot at the Royal Variety Performance and net a cool £250,000 in prize money. But one contestant must surely set a show record. David Watson, a magician from Altrincham, Greater Manchester, competed on the talent competition an impressive 12 times. Sadly, David was discovered dead at home in December 2021, after concerns raised by his family who couldn’t reach him. His passing was deemed non-suspicious.

Britain’s Got Talent finale date revealed – as Ant McPartlin prepares for first return to TV since birth of his son
BGT shared the news via their Twitter account, saying: “We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of David J. Watson. David was a much-loved part of BGT, bringing fun and heart to the show year after year. We send our condolences to all his friends and family.” His first appearance was back in 2008 where he did impressions of politicians Tony Blair, William Hague and David Blunkett. Although his first performance didn’t go down well, he came back stronger in 2010 with an Incredible Hulk act that judge Amanda Holden described as ‘bloody awful’. David, a regular at the BGT auditions since 2013 once said: “I just love being on the show”. The retiree from the NHS made it to the second round in 2020 with his ‘magic rainbow’ act, a performance applauded as his best by the judges.

He was sadly found dead at his home
Reflecting on his loss, Amanda remembered: “He was always up for a laugh and such a good sport,” continuing with, “We will miss him.” Hosts Ant and Dec also commented on the loss, saying: “So sorry to hear this. We looked forward to seeing David every year and enjoy what he would create for us. All of us at #BGT will miss him. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.” Speaking to the Manchester Evening News in August 2021, David said: “My first ever audition was back in 2007, but I never got through. A lot of people think the first time you get on TV is your first audition, but you’ve got to pass another audition before you can even get to perform for the judges.” He added: “I just love being on the show. To be on TV is very good because I get recognised in the Trafford Centre and people ask me for a selfie – I feel pretty honoured about it.
