The panicked former England striker was forced to make an emergency call to his jeweller to get his wedding band resized less than 48 hours before he was due to say “I do” to wife Donna. “Two nights before the wedding, I tried my ring on to make sure it fit and it wouldn’t go over my knuckles,” recalled Jermain. “I have a jeweller in Hatton Gardens – I get all my jewellery from him – and he came over to see us. The next day it fit perfectly.”

At 3pm on June 4th, Jermain swapped custom-made rings and traditional vows with Donna on a mirrored walkway in front of a 20ft wall of flowers. The couple were surrounded by 360 friends and family and football A-listers at Cliveden House, the stunning venue where Meghan Markle stayed the night before she married Prince Harry. Describing his wedding band, Jermain said: “In the middle of my band there is white gold and platinum with two diamonds either side.” “Mine is emerald-cut all round,” added Donna. “My engagement ring is emerald cut, so I wanted it to go with that. I love it.”

Footballer Jermain Defoe marries beauty therapist fiancée in lavish £200k ceremony

The newlyweds invited OK! inside their three-day long wedding extravaganza, complete with fire-eaters, football a-listers and super-posh chicken kiev. It began on Friday night with a barbecue for 150 friends, family and closed out with afternoon tea on Sunday before Donna’s family caught the Rangers team bus back to her hometown of Glasgow. The England striker, who retired from professional football in March, has played for West Ham, Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland and Rangers. But he says the moment he married Donna was a greater feeling than scoring any of his 20 goals for England.

He told OK!: “It was just the best feeling ever. Taking a penalty and scoring a goal, that feeling is hard to describe because when you’re celebrating for 30 seconds you feel so powerful, but standing with Donna, it was more than football. “Everyone knows I’m football crazy but this is my future, this is forever, this is my person I want to spend the rest of my life with.” The couple, who met in January 2021, have jetted off to the Maldives for their honeymoon where they have been adjusting to their new Mr & Mrs titles. “When I’m like, ‘This is my wife, Donna,’ it’s still weird but amazing,” laughed Jermain. “I feel like a proper grown-up.” While Donna admitted, “It hasn’t sunk in yet. It still feels like a dream.” For the latest on the very best celebrity weddings, sign up for OK!s daily newsletter here.
