Privacy NoticeIconic pub chain J D Wetherspoon seems to be shaking things up as it’s rumoured that buyers are circling around a slew of venues, including signature spots in Swindon, Edinburgh, and St Ives. The much-loved ‘Spoons’ could see its expansive 790-site empire slim down by ten, with properties up for grabs across Scotland, England, and Wales, following more than a dozen closures. Fans of the brand have been left searching for new haunts to satisfy their cravings for budget-friendly sips and bites after these shut-downs. Catford will particularly feel the absence of The London and Rye Wetherspoon – a local favourite that said goodbye on Sunday, August 25, after two and a half decades of service. Earlier this year, reputable agent Savills advertised the property, encouraging offers over £850,000. Whispers suggest that prospective deals are on the table for several pubs, including the Sir Daniel Arms in Swindon and the Hain Line in St Ives, reports the Express. Not all news is gloomy though; some beloved locations have dodged closure, like The Spa Lane Vaults in Chesterfield, which was joyously yanked off the market this March. Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon confirmed to Derbyshire Live: “We can confirm that The Spa Lane Vaults pub in Chesterfield is no longer for sale,” and added, “It will continue to run as a Wetherspoon pub. We are sure that this news will be welcomed by the pub’s staff and customers.”

Regulars at the pub are breathing a sigh of relief, with one loyal customer sharing, “Great to see common sense has won the day. We have used the vaults quite a lot over the years, it would have been a great shame to see it turned into a carpet shop or whatever. Here’s to a load more years.” The Thomas Drummond in Fleetwood had its for-sale sign taken down in a surprising turn of events much to the joy of local beer enthusiasts. Claire Buxton, who manages the venue, couldn’t hide her excitement about the decision, saying it would be a “delight” for staff and patrons alike, and looking forward to “We look forward to serving the Fleetwood community for many more years to come.”

While some have speculated that for-sale signs could spell trouble for the beloved pub chain, owner Tim Martin insists closures are confined to less profitable “smaller and older” pubs or those in areas with another branch close by. In a triumphant rebuttal to any whispers of distress, Wetherspoons has just launched an impressive ‘super pub’ in Newcastle, with two additional openings slated for next month, including The Lion and The Unicorn in London’s bustling Waterloo station. Barid’s Department Store in Hamilton (an underdeveloped site), The Quay in Poole, and several Wetherspoons locations including The Sir Daniel Arms in Swindon, Hain Line in St Ives, and Foot of the Walk in Leith are all said to be ‘under offer’.
