Privacy NoticeEastEnders actress Bonnie Langford is back on our screens in Doctor Who – a role she first played four decades ago. The star says she’s happy to be back, but went through a sad phase in her life when she separated from her husband in 2015. The 59 year old national treasure parted ways with actor Paul Grunert in 2015 after they “fell out of love” following two decades of marriage. The pair, who share a daughter, tied the knot in 1995 in Mauritius, reports the Express. In April 2015, Bonnie, who also played Carmel Kazemi in EastEnders, cited “unreasonable behaviour” in documents submitted at a court in London’s Holborn. A close friend of Bonnie told the Mirror in 2015: “She is getting over the pain in the best way possible by taking on a new challenge in her life.” “She split from her husband quite some time ago and it is very amicable and they remain good friends. Bonnie has not discussed the split publicly as she wants to talk about EastEnders now and not her personal life. The priority for her and Paul is their daughter.”

Reflecting on her relationship with Grunert prior to their divorce, Bonnie shared: “I’d known Paul since 1987, when we’d done a show together. But I just hadn’t thought of him in that way. Then a friend suggested we all get together.” “In the end, she couldn’t make it, so it was just Paul and me. And that was that. It’s always the times in your life when you’re not looking that you find what you need.”

The multi-talented Bonnie has the triple threat of acting, dancing and singing under her belt. She shot to fame with notable roles in Doctor Who, EasEenders and on both West End and Broadway stages. Bonnie won hearts in the early 70s with her portrayal of Mel Bush, a companion of Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy in BBC’s cult sci-fi series Doctor Who. Having commanded an impressive 50-year career span, she has sealed her place in entertainment history. Bonnie is returning to Doctor Who to play the role of Mel Bush. Speaking about revisiting the role, Bonnie said: “I never in my life would have said, ‘yeah, I’ll be back doing that’. “The thought seems ridiculous, but it’s such a happy place to work. It’s so great to be back!” She originally played Mel from 1986 to 1987 alongside Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy’s Sixth and Seventh incarnations of the time traveller. Bonnie reprised the role for a brief cameo in 2022 story, The Power of the Doctor.
